Day 549 - Nepal 🇳🇵 Annapurna Circuit High Camp
—
A second chance?
—
Everyone was hopeful for another day like yesterday. We woke early, we checked the sky, and then checked again. Still clouds and no mountains. 03:00, 04:00, virtually every hour we checked, but sadly no luck. Mother Nature had granted us only one small window on sun and mountains. It is monsoon season after all. We hung around till 10:00am, ate some porridge and kept our noses firmly pressed to the window in hope we would get a sight of more mountains. We eventually packed our things, paid the bill in the tea house, thanked them for their hospitality and began the long trudge down the hill. The mist, the dew, the wet ground; the weather was fast becoming our narrative for the past few days. The leeches didn’t like it up at 4000 metres, but we’d soon be lower and in their territory. We covered our shoes in a paste of water and salt in an attempt to keep the blighters from grappling up from the floor to our skin. It seem to work sort of.
—
It took us 9 hours in one intense downward hike. We were hoping for 4 hours, but the weather and the slippery surface, plus the fact that death was only a few feet away made us a little more tentative to say the least.
—
Finally we made it back. To our amazement the sun did shine once we were below the clouds, and the weather warmed up. We delayed and eventually reached our final check point before jumping in the jeep to drive them 2 bumpy hours back to Pokhara city.
—
Laundry done, some food inside us, Chris and I chatted for hours and made future plans for various other expeditions and mountain based ideas.
—
These last few days have been magical thanks to some great people. Thank you so much. Tomorrow we fly back to Kathmandu. I don’t want to leave.
