.<br />Arctic (2019)<br />•••••<br />🍿 Synopsis: A man stranded in the Arctic must decide whether to remain in the safety of his camp or to embark on a deadly trek.<br />•••••<br />📓 Review: With the exception of the 2013 masterpiece All is Lost, Arctic will probably be the best man vs nature movie you’ve probably seen in the last decade.<br />.<br />In these films, the movie relies almost entirely on the performance of its leading actor, and fortunately for Arctic, it had Mads Mikkelsen. He is basically alone for the majority of the film so the dialogue in this film is very scarce, but Mads is always able to convey so so much by just the simplest of looks, sighs, and body language.<br />.<br />The film also relies on the audience to realize what is happening instead of choosing the easy way out like voice over narration. Arctic instead relies on the “show don’t tell” rule and gives you bits and pieces of the character’s journey. Which ultimately makes you connected and invested in him much more.<br />.<br />The movie also has some deceptively touching moments that you won’t necessarily realize are creeping up on you until they eventually happen.<br />.<br />But like with all films of this type, having very long stretches of time with basically no speakable dialogue and barely any spoken exchanges throughout the film, alongside the slower pace, might turn people off from seeing it.<br />.<br />Overall, I thought Arctic was a very gripping, beautifully shot, engaging survival movie led by an amazing (maybe career-best performance) from Mads Mikkelsen.
