It’s getting warmer again in Berlin and with it, the subway also gets smellier… In the 19th century, you could have used this little handy smelling jar to make you feel more comfortable. In it, one kept good smelling oils, usually added to salt such as ammonium carbonate. Whenever one was about to faint, one could open the lid and get (an ephemeral) relief – either because of the good smelling oil or because the ammonium carbonate was said to help you breath.
