Imagine you go to a family reunion and your auntie approaches you. You've only met aunt Karen once when you were 4. What do you talk about? The weather? Is it likely going to be a genuine conversation or small talk?
We tend to talk about the things we care the least about when we're most uncomfortable. We're all just trying to prove that we're good conversationalists. Rather than be okay with small talk in uncomfortable situations, maybe we should default to asking them questions about their lives and try to learn something from them.
