Gio Ponti Tiles
Gio Ponti was the Frank Lloyd Wright of Italy: an architect who designed furniture, started a magazine, built big commercial and public buildings, and created a collection of ceramic tiles that, to this day, continues to charm with its aesthetic taste and modernity. Tiles and tile making are a long established tradition in Southern Italy and when an aristocratic family commissioned Gio Ponti, in the 1950’s, to design, a hotel for their family estate, perched on a cliff on the Amalfi coast, he was inspired to use only one colour - blue - and to design more than a hundred different patterns of tiles using only this one colour.
