At Lee's Ferry, below the Vermilion Cliffs, is the @usgs demarcation between the upper and lower Colorado River basins. River flow measured here helped determine allocation amounts for the Colorado River Compact signed between the western states, Mexico, and Native American tribes that use water from the river.
Historically the ferry was the only crossing point along the river for hundreds of miles in either direction. Early LDS/Mormon pioneers that lived south in Arizona would travel north along the Honeymoon Trail to the LDS temple in St George, Utah, to be married for time and eternity. The ferry operated at the only accessible crossing between canyon walls, just below the Paria River output. Just downstream is the beginning of the Grand Canyon, while upstream is Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell.
