My leopard print coat was much admired when I wore it at the weekend. When I told my client it was ‘vintage new look’ she thought there was a new range she’d not heard of. The reality is, I’ve had this coat in my wardrobe for about 20 years.

I so vividly remember buying it in @newlook Oxford Street on a shopping trip with my Mum and it cost £25.

At first I was a little afraid to wear it for fear that I would stand out too much, but that was a much younger version of me too worried about what people might think.

I have worn and worn and worn this coat over the years, the cost per wear must be under a penny by now.

Often when I’m editing wardrobes, clients have clothes they’ve had for a long time, this doesn’t matter, in fact this is a really good thing.

When you buy well (and that doesn’t mean expensive) your clothes will transcend seasons and trends and stay in your wardrobe a long time.

I encourage my clients to really get to know their wardrobes, that’s why styling is a process and a journey which takes time. When you invest that time in yourself you will reap the rewards for years to come. Your wardrobe will reflect who you are and your own individual style with a collection of pieces that has been beautifully curated with both existing and new items. Old clothes can be brought back to life with a little injection of something new and that makes you feel like you have a whole new outfit.

What gems are hidden in the back of your wardrobe waiting to be re-invented?
