Tomorrow is Mardi Gras. While many equate the Mardi Gras celebration to New Orleans, did you know that the oldest annual Mardi Gras and Carnival celebration is held in Mobile, Alabama?
Mobile was the capital of French Louisiana, and in 1703, Nicholas Langlois started the tradition of masked balls, parades, floats and throws. Begun as a French Catholic tradition, it evolved into the mainstream month-long celebration it is today.
Another tradition of the season is King Cake (sometimes called 3 Kings Cake). This cinnamon-roll style cake is topped with colorful icing and sugars and is served from Epiphany until Mardi Gras. The cakes may also be found stuffed with cream cheese, fruit, or nut fillings. In addition, a small baby, symbolizing the baby Jesus, is hidden inside the cake. Tradition dictates that whoever finds the figurine has to purchase the next King Cake or host the next Mardi Gras party.
Many drinks pair well with the cinnamon flavors including King Cake coffee and … of course … a traditional, spicy American bourbon or rye whiskey.
