This started out as a wonky looking sketch which I did pre-pandemic and I could have just left it where it was in my old A3 sketchbook.... but I didn't want to give up on my most-loved villain!
This is my portrait of Lo-Pan from my favourite film, 'Big Trouble in Little China' with which I've been obsessed, ever since watching it whenever it was on TV in my childhood 📺✨

I've really enjoyed trying to correct it by first of all using my easel for perspective and then adding lots of colour a bit at a time. I drew the face last December /New Year's in aquapencil shades of blue then added the body outline. I left it for ages to make time for other projects but today, shut away from the crazy UK June heat🔥 I finally finished off all the little details and big blocks of colour.
Shout out to @biggertroubleinlittlechina for keeping the faith! Love this film. Like a lot of "out-there" films it spans the genres Action/Comedy/Fantasy... which describes films like 'Vice Versa' and 'Big.' If you've never watched it, give it a try - it's a bit tongue-in-cheek and you should be prepared for a classic but cheesily funny and OTT script, slapstick antics, banging soundtrack and completely mad expensive state-of-the-art 1980s special effects... watch out for the Guardian, a floating, squidgy pink sentinel covered in roving eyeballs which cost an equally eye-watering amount to create - just for this film! Did you know that 'Big Trouble in Little China' flopped at cinemas when it was first released because due to delays it arrived on the big screen after 'Golden Child,' just as silly 😋 and as mystical a film featuring Eddie Murphy, Charles Dance (who plays another amazing fun villain) and Victor Wong who's Egg Shen in BTILC. Big Trouble now enjoys cult status, as deserved!
