For those of you who have read this novel every year, please bear with me. For the rest of you…this will take a little explanation. File this in the TL:DR category!

Every family has traditions that are unique. Sometimes, they are handed down from generation to generation. Sometimes...they happen spontaneously. And, those are usually the best ones!

18 years ago, when Landon was just a newborn and Aidan and Emily were very young, we were riding in the car the week before the Super Bowl. Emily asked, “Daddy, what’s the Super Bowl?” I’ve been known to play a joke or two in my day...so, I had to play with the kids a bit. I turned around and said (wide eyed) “you don’t know what the Super Bowl is?!? Well, do you have a Super Bowl?” Aidan and Emily looked back all serious and said “No!”. So, I completely made the next part up...”well, kids, the Super Bowl is the one day a year when you break out your special Super Bowl and fill it up with all of your favorite treats and sit around with your family, play games and watch football!” The kids were so excited that we had to go straight to the store and find them their very own Super Bowl!

I’ll say this...what started as a random off-the-cuff joke has become a classic family tradition with an 18 year run that they are now sharing with their friends. It’s gone from rolling dice to picking numbered containers, the idea is the same. I wear my Pat Tillman jersey and usually Sarah and I share the cooking for the evening. This year, the Samuels shared the food duties with us.

While it was a laid back version this year…we still love our Super Bowls and this tradition. It may stop at some point. And if it does…I’ll forever be thankful for an incredible 18 year run! The best part of today was getting pics from my cousins who have started doing their own version at their houses with their “littles”! I will always hold tightly onto the memories of these incredible smiling faces on the kids and the laughter that we’ve all shared!

So, from our family to yours...enjoy your Super Bowls everyone!
