Grackle 2024
Common, great-tailed, boat-tailed, slender-billed, and that’s only to name a few. Who knew there were so many types of grackle? (Well, not the slender-billed anymore, turns out they’re extinct, but the others.) To tell you the truth I hadn’t given grackles much thought (well, any thought really) till I had to try and id this bird for today’s post. But forget the nomenclature (although I think he’s probably a boat-tailed grackle) but look at how striking he is. When I was out shooting I was mostly ignoring these birds. I was looking for something flashy and these grackles appeared to be solid black and boring. I only took this photo because nothing else was around and I thought I’ll just get in a little more practice with my camera (handholding , settings, that kinda thing). It wasn’t till I got this shot up on my computer that I saw all the subtleties and all the hidden details. I love the crisscross pattern his feathers make, and the faint indigo iridescence where the light hits ‘em just right. And what about the puffed up black of his head and breast. Very cool.
