The plantation covered 500 acres and was founded in 1747 by Johan Friederich Knöffel from Prussia. The nickname of the plantation, Knofroe, refers to the owner. He also owned the plantations Buitenrust and Johan Margaretha. Three years after his death in 1768, his heirs expanded the plantation by an additional 225 acres to total 500 acres (approximately 215 hectares). Coffee and cotton were cultivated on the plantation.
