Drifting
By the winter of 2023, we had completed 75% of the new album @sampsonsound in Atlanta. Drifting was written around this time. I felt that the songs we had recorded so far were very heavy lyrically, and maybe the album could benefit from something a bit lighter (Not sure I accomplished that). This was a great idea in theory. The only problem is that every time I “try” to write and push things in a certain direction, it ends up sounding like shit!
I came up with a few ideas, but none were great. Kris, really encouraged me to reset my intention, and to just “write” instead of forcing a song to happen. What eventually came into focus was a reflection on the inevitability of change, something I’ve always struggled with. At times, it feels like a monster that can’t be tamed. It’s always present in our lives, yet I often find myself unprepared to handle it.
Sonically, it has some of my favorite moments on the record. Kris went crazy with some synths and pads, @saltydodd created some serious thunder and @nickwhitson held down the low end. It was also a treat to have @gas_hound sing some harmonies on this one. Really proud of this one.
