Brian Ború and the de Burgo (Burke) connection.<br /><br />Today marks  the anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf on 23 April 1014 in  which Brian Bóruma, High King of Ireland was victorious over the  Norse-Irish alliance led by Sigtrygg Silkbeard, King of Dublin; Máel Mórda mac Murchadha, King of Leinster, Sigurd of Orkney and Brodir of Mann. Unfortunately Brian was slayed in the aftermath.<br /><br />Brian Boru was 3rd-great grandfather of <br />Domnall Mór mac Toirrdelbaig Uí Briain, King of Thomond whose daughter married  William de Burgo. William as part of the Norman conquest was granted a large fief  stretching from Limerick to Cashel in the Golden Vale where the barony of Clanwilliam still bears his name. This marriage alliance helped secure his position in this region. William died in 1205 and was buried in the Augustinian  Priory which he had founded in Athassel, Co.
