How to Hike to the highest point in Australia as a stretch goal [save this post for later]

The wonderful thing about hiking to the top of Mt Kosciusko, is that there are a number of options available. Remember there is no “right” way to hike” - only what YOU enjoy.

If this hike is a stretch goal, the best option is to start from Thredbo Village. Taking the chairlift brings you a good distance up the slope, leaving a 13km round trip that is well maintained, scenic and includes the highest toilet in Australia 🎉

The chairlift is used for skiing in winter, and in summer it is a beautiful scenic ride. Passes are per day, and multiple day passes are available, so do consider if a multiday pass is for you (and look at some other walks you can do).

From the top of the chairlift, you cannot get lost. Just follow the metal path, and the stairs, all the way to the top. Along the way, stop regularly and admire the view. Just step off the path, sit on a rock, and ENJOY!

When you do arrive at the top, the crowd is extremely well behaved, and will queue calmly for each person to climb on top of the monument (if you want to) and the person behind you will happily take your photo if you want!

After you have enjoyed the view, make your way back down the slope (much easier). Just make sure you get back to the chairlift by 4pm, to catch the last ride down.

What to bring: a warm jacket in case the weather changes, water and some snacks.

Are you keen to do this hike but worried?
