Saturday was a special day. I had the honor of being promoted to Sensei, 3rd Dan, in Kobukai Jujitsu by Shihan Russ St Hilaire. Kobukai Jujitsu was my first introduction to the world of grappling and jiu-jitsu, and in addition to Kyokushin karate, made up my foundation as a martial artist allowing me a solid footing from which to expand into other arts.
I first walked into Shihan Russ’ backyard dojo when I was 18 years old, where we engaged in grueling, intense training. Shihan Russ was one of the only people even teaching jiu-jitsu in the state at that time. My very first time trying MMA sparring was in that dojo, and some of the techniques I still use the most to this day began to be perfected there through hard, repetitive training. Now at over 20 years training jiu-jitsu, it was an emotional moment for me to receive this recognition from one of the most influential instructors in my life.
