In addition to wanting your reader to imagine what is happening through the images in their mind,
You also want them to
FEEL…
HEAR…
TOUCH…
TASTE…
SMELL…
SEE…
All of the action that is unfolding.
A top tip here is to avoid saying things like:
‘they heard voices’
‘they saw it coming’
‘the smell was strong’
And keep it to the reader to decide the sense that is at work by saying:
‘voices drifted into the room’
‘what was this coming toward them?’
‘The atmosphere was filled with heavenly scents’
This creates more imagery for the reader and makes the story more of their own experience. Examiners love it.
