In Catalonia, April 23rd is a special day known as "Sant Jordi" (Saint George). It's a day filled with love, culture, and tradition. But do you know the legend behind it?
According to the legend, a fearsome dragon terrorized a small village, demanding the sacrifice of a young maiden each day. One day, the princess was chosen as the next victim. However, a brave knight named Sant Jordi (Saint George) appeared and fought the dragon, ultimately slaying it with his sword.
From the dragon's blood, a rosebush bloomed, and Sant Jordi plucked the most beautiful rose for the princess as a symbol of love and victory. This act of chivalry gave birth to the tradition of men giving roses to women, and women giving books to men on Sant Jordi's Day.
Today, Sant Jordi is celebrated with festive street markets, where roses and books fill the streets, honoring love, literature, and the spirit of bravery.
