In yesterday's plenary, "Fact Meets Fiction: Emerging Risks Unlike You've Ever Heard", chaired by Vanessa Beenders, was a riveting exploration of the intersection between storytelling and risk management.
Keynote speaker, thriller author and Non-Executive Director @john.m.green, alongside space expert @profalanduffy and Actuary/Director at Finity, Estelle Pearson, delved into enhancing our approach to risk through imaginative thinking.
John underscored the need to expect the unexpected and fostering our imagination as an essential tool for business, as rational and logical models often don't account for real-life irrationalities. Quoting his mentor - "There are no such thing as dumb questions, only dumb answers" - John advocated for challenging conventional wisdom even if it feels uncomfortable.
Alan highlighted the balance required in leveraging technology for productivity while ensuring resilience against unpredictable risks. Meanwhile, Estelle pointed out the limitations of relying solely on past data for future predictions, urging the need for interdisciplinary collaboration to manage and mitigate emerging risks.
Their insights compelled us to rethink our strategies and embrace a broader perspective—because in an ever more complex world, not using our imagination is a risk we can't afford.
