The “ugly” masks that represent the dark side of nature in the traditional New Year’s festival on the Appenzell region of Switzerland. There are also the “pretty” masks to offset these. These masks are handmade by local residents and are extremely meticulous. Learning about this tradition in the region was a highlight of this last trip to Europe for me.
