The spark for the protests came from a contentious issue involving the delegation of visa issuance authority to a foreign entity, reportedly linked to India.
The protest highlights broader worries about sovereignty and economic control, as protesters accuse India of repeatedly invading key areas of the Sri Lankan economy and government machinery.
Protesters have voiced their determination not to succumb to what they perceive as Indian hegemony. “We are not a slave of Indian hegemony,” one protester told the media. “We will continue this protest in very strong terms if the government does not take proper action,” she added.
