This dress was inspired by a picture of a Greek-style merveilleuse. It well characterizes the change of style taking place in France with the reign of Napoleon. The new style first inherited Greek, Egyptian, and Etruscan motifs, and then borrowed the heritage of the Roman Empire. For my dress I took the Empire period when dense and bright fabrics had already completely replaced light and white dresses similar to a chiton. And the embroidery became very popular at Napoleon's court. In the 9th century BC In the Mediterranean basin there was such a civilization as the Etruscans. They almost completely transferred their cultural and religious heritage to the civilization of Rome. Looking at the ornaments characteristic of ancient Roman civilization, you can see how the lines and composition changed due to the mixing of cultures. The characteristic decoration owes specifically to the Etruscans, although the influence of Greek motifs, such as the meander, is very noticeable. The fascination with Etruscan motifs can be seen on Napoleon's uniform and compared with the motifs depicted on Etruscan vases. If you are interested in small historical notes, then let me know. I will post more content like this. Traveling back in time (New video up on YouTube): We had a unique opportunity to camp and experience a look at what life might have been like in the 1,800's during the Civil War. The Battle at Narcoossee Mill was not an actual battle but is a 3-day Civil War reenactment that has happened over the last 30 years each March in St Cloud, Florida with activities that include a demonstration of 1860’s infantry, cavalry, and artillery; a soldier encampment; battle; Sutler's Row where Civil War costumes and supplies can be purchased; a tea for ladies; and a barn dance with period music and dance. A special thanks to my cousin and his family who invited us to attend this really interesting event, especially as it is the last year due to development of the land that has been used for the reenactment each year. 👉 Watch this interesting weekend event via link in our bio! 🚐 Follow us for low budget vanlife, travel, nature, wildlife sightings, and some humor! In 2020, we bought an empty 2019 Ford Transit cargo van and spent the next 2.5 years working to convert the van into a tiny home on wheels while also traveling whenever we could. In 2023, we sold our home and went full time! We've been sharing our experience as we travel the country on a low budget with our cat Lady Gray Gray Gillespie Pinkerton.

Today's #ootd is this silver gown worn by Hedvig Elisabeth Charlotta (Queen Consort of Charles XIII of Sweden/ Charles II or Noway) at her coronation in 1809. It has a classic Regency silhouette with Renaissance-inspired sleeves. The belt is particularly fascinating with sequins in the shape of crowns. Her shoes likewise had little crowns. The dress apparently had some more embroidered crowns and an attached train, but they were later reused by the next Queen of Sweden and Norway, Désirée Clary. @livrustkammaren #livrustkammaren #Fashionhistory #costumehistory #museumcollection #dresshistory #eveningdress #eveningdresses #1800s #1800 #1800sdress #1800sstyle #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturydress #19thcenturydresses #coronationgown

#austenapril by @laughingwithlizzie Day 17: Diamond Diamonds are a girl's best friend - since the discovery of diamonds in Brazil and India’s Golconda diamond mine in the early 1700s provided an abundance of these precious gems. Old mine and rose-cut diamonds were the preferred gems for evening wear in the early 19th century, especially on long earrings. They were cut by hand and costly, but thanks to the further development of glass paste stones, cheaper "diamonds" were easily available. To enhance the colour and whiteness of the diamonds, they were set in silver, the only white precious metal available. These examples are all replicas of late 18th and early 19th century jewelry made by our society member @orniello_by_celefindel. #austenapril by @laughingwithlizzie Day 2: Heart The "Georgian Heart" or "Witch's Heart" became already famous in the 17th century, when it was a token for love and protection, often used for little children. In the later 18th century, it's meaning changed mainly to a gift of one "bewitched by love". It's a open shaped heart often crowned, made of precious or base metal and with or without gemstones. Garnets were very fashionable for them for they emphasise the symbol of love even more. 📷 @orniello_by_celefindel #historicaljewellery #historicaljewelry #broochhandmade #brooch #broochoftheday #regencyfashion #regencyera #regency #regencystyle #regencyjewelry #early19thcentury #late18thcentury #luckenbooth #georgianjewelry #georgianstyle #1800s #1800sstyle #replica #replik #replicajewelry #georgianheart #witchsheart #janeaustensocietyaustria #janeaustensociety #janeites #janeausten

I wish you all a happy Easter! 🌷🐣 The "Georgian Heart" or "Witch's Heart" became already famous in the 17th century, when it was a token for love and protection, often used for little children. In the later 18th century, it's meaning changed mainly to a gift of one "bewitched by love". It's a open shaped heart often crowned, made of precious or base metal and with or without gemstones (you might know my bronze one). Garnets were very fashionable for them for they emphasise the symbol of love even more. This replica is based on 1800s originals. It's made of glass rhinestones but it sparkles nonetheless! #Ootd is this 1874 robe a la transformation (aka it has two bodices- for day and evening wear). In the 1870s, skirts were held up by bustles made of wire and horsehair as cinolines disappeared. This created a bell-like shape that was longer in the back and hugged the front. It was also known for its plethora of trimmings, seen here with all the bows & tulle. However, this dress is a little behind the fashion, as bodices were getting longer and resting on the hips, closely clinging to the body. Here they are still very short. @museemccordstewart #museemccord #fashionhistory #victorian #dress #victoriandress #1870s #1870sfashion #1870sdress #1870 #1870sstyle #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturydress #victorianstyle #victorianfashion #costumehistory #dresshistory #1800s #1800sfashion #1800sstyle #19thcentury #19thcenturyfashion #19thcenturycostume #19thcenturydress #robealatransformation

Our week of celebrating the Oscars continues with the third film nominated for best costumes, Ridley Scott's Napoleon. Costume Designers Janty Yates and David Crossman had the big task of adapting the clothes over time, as the look of the French army changes from just after the revolution through to Napoleon’s time as consul to Napoleon’s time as emperor. I was inspired by the scene Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon) meets Josephine (Vanessa Kirby). Happy #fatfriday! Since we've been in an empire state of mind (good lord that was a horrible dad joke but I'm just leaning in and moving past it) may I introduce you to Sophie Regnault (1763-1825, née Meyer). Sophie was a French artist and these are three portraits of her by her husband, painter Jean-Baptiste Regnault from 1809, 1807, and circa 1795. She is impeccably dressed in simple white high waisted gowns with shawls in warm shades of red and orange (probably all the same shawl worn multiple times). The last image is a drawing by Sophie, Double Portrait of François Heurtier and His Wife Marie-Victoire Jobbé in Profile, 1801. #fatatist #1800sfashion #1800sstyle #fatfashionhistory #fatfashion #paisley #kashmirshawl

Kashmir shawls became the it fashion accessory in the early 19th century. The perfect thing to keep you warm in your very very sheer muslin gown. Also a luxurious status symbol, that is if your shawl was actually one expertly hand woven in Kashmir out of the fine goat wool from there. They were originally brought back to Europe by men in the British East India Company and then exported by the Company. Soon after many manufacturers in Europe tried to mechanize the production of these hugely popular textiles, particularly in Paisley, Scotland which becomes another name for the boteh pattern. It took a while before the European manufacturers made textiles or patterns that were nearly as desirable as the original shawls from Kashmir. I feel like these ladies are saying, "oh this old thing?" It's like throwing your $10,000 designer handbag next to your chair at the restaurant. @melindalwatt gave a brilliant lecture on the history of these textiles and their design that is really worth watching if you really want to go down the rabbit hole!
