Tight. Today I experimented with the new long lens. The conditions were not optimal, but it was an opportunity to get used to the big glass and its capabilities. I quickly discovered that its reach was perhaps too powerful in certain instances. I unintentionally cropped some of the images because I had the zoom setting at max focal length. But I will learn and adapt and work towards mastering this lens as I have with my others.

Spring Swell Clean. Spring time in New England is often a bouillabaisse of mixed and variable conditions. There’s swell to be sure, but contrasted with the more often groomed conditions of Fall Swell, the winds and angles are often chaotic and you have to take what you can get. But occasionally, everything aligns and you luck into the rare session of clean, playful surf. I shot these images on one such day in precede of a new swell. The three days that have followed, so far have been a mess of side shore, curmudgeonly junk. You advantage such days as in these images, and the rest...you take it as it comes... Re-tweaks, in B&W. When I first returned to the mainland from Nantucket, I lived within a 10 minute drive of two fun breaks that soon became my mainstays. One was a predominantly low tide point break that I had surfed years prior; it was so much fun reacquainting myself, especially when I discovered how much potential it had on a long board (we never used to ride logs in the 70’s and 80’s) after having deemed it too soft an mushy for shortboards. The second break I don’t believe I had surfed before, though I had surfed up the beach a quarter-mile; I had no idea that there could be so much difference in two beach breaks situated so close to each other. Turns out, this second break broke best on higher tides and benefitted from a sandbar formed just outside of a drainpipe from the marsh across the street. I also soon discovered their were established crews who surfed both these breaks and that the vibe in the lineup was usually mellow, perfect for an old-timer like me. There were a number of good surfers at both breaks but these two stood out. Maestros of their longboards, I would later discover that in more serious waves they were equally adept at ripping high-performance short boards. They also became frequent targets in front of my lens, yielding a number of useable images within a few minutes time. I love when I go back through the archives and find the gems that slipped through the cracks, usually because of some technical flaw. But the poise, the pose, and the mastery of the board and the wave has to be acknowledged. Triple Barrel Storms. Including today, we’ve had three major storm swells in just one week. The first one was a full on blizzard that dumped about a foot and a half of snow. A few days later most of the snow disappeared with the second, and now third storm bringing a deluge of rain and coastal erosion and flooding.
