Day 135 of #200daysofpractice 1) green scales in c major (hardest scale, tell me I’m wrong) just because it sounded not so great at marching rehearsal and I wanted to make sure I understood the exercise well. I’ll also need to see a video of myself playing this on xylo because my stick heights should be lower since the xylophone is so piercing. 2) all state scales at 150 bpm. Nothing crazy, just me tracking progress on these scales. I think there were two wrong notes here, but I trust with some hard work it will get better. It’s funny because I feel like I actually play less wrong notes when I sort of stop focusing so much and just let the hands do the work, but when I overthink it I tend to miss more. It’s interesting how big of a role the mental aspect is! Day 133 of #200daysofpractice More work on soft snare drumming since the soft parts of Delecluse still sound kinda bad. I did some eights variations (regular, after, before, and transitions in that order), sixteens all in the tempo of Etude 9, and then played the beginning part of Delecluse after that. I know exactly what I’m going to do tomorrow and that is bully my left hand because I’m sick of it dragging me down in Delecluse. Day 131 of #200daysofpractice Sorry no post today since I got back from city walk at like 11:30. I’m not trying to slack so I’ll be back on track for the next posts! But I’ll explain how I practiced today with my mallet exercise, Powell 11 I believe. I tried using timers for this exercise because I wanted to make it quick but efficient, since I had limited time. It was a bit of an experiment, I’ll try it some more and see if I like it. But basically this exercise goes through all twelve keys so I spent two minutes working on each scale. I normally would try to make it longer to break it down further, but I was trying to help it done in 40ish minutes. In between each key I would add on each scale to the exercise, make an adjustments or fixes, and take a brief break to drink some water and shake out the hands. Day 130 of #200daysofpractice I worked on breaking down some runs from all state audition music (10-14 clicks under tempo). The piece is opus 36 number two, Allegro from Sonatina by Clementi. I guess these would be sequences as well although in my mind the first one is more just breaking it up than a sequence to me. 1) I fumbled on this run a bit so I wanted to break it down a bit. It’s an arpeggio into a descending d major scale into an arpeggio pattern. My pattern for this was basically take chunks of the scale section and repeat it, then take away the repetition, then decrease the space in between the run until it’s one motion. Then do the same with the arpeggio and put it together! I think I missed a note and I’m a bit downstrokey but other than tee hat it’s fine 2) this is more of a sequence to practice a sixteenth note figure that repeats in different variations throughout the piece. It’s even trickier because it’s at piano First I broke down the first and second part of the run and put it together, the I did a swing and antiswing version of it. Then I did the version with the roll ending, the crescendo version. And broke it down again to add the version with the sixteenth note tail ending. Day 125 of #200daysofpractice Honestly kind of some mediocre recordings today. First of all, im pretty frustrated because I forgot to turn the met to half or a quarter of the speed to work on time, and you can tell I wasn’t really thinking about time or rhythm, which is something I ALWAYS have to think about, and I was just following the met. A general comment is just to loosen my wriest, but that ESPECIALLY for scales, I looked really tense. But yeah, quite a few wrong notes thrown around, but I’m still working on this stuff 1) This is me breaking up Powell #11 (I believe). I just added a break every four beats so I could think lol. 2) The exercise as written. Also I cut at the last few keys just cuz I have to sharpen those up. 3) All state audition music is coming out tomorrow so I wanted to hear my scales and see how much I forgot, at a medium ish tempo. Honestly better than I expected, but there’s still stuff to work on definitely. Better than last year but there are some wrong notes scattered in there I have to clean up. It’s kind of annoying because it’s normally pretty random, but one thing I can target is D major, because there’s ALWAYS some wrong notes in that one. But the good thing is I feel like this year I know how to fix those notes better than last year ALSO USE MORE WRIST. And also from tomorrow until the all state audition I’m going to try to sight reading (particularly mallets) every day (maybe not while I’m at NYO though haha) The worst part of my audition last year was probably that, so I’m not gonna let that slide this year. Day 118 of #200daysofpractice 1) and 2) (same thing on different hands) this is an arpeggio exercise to work on four mallet stuff, one hand at a time. Still taking the exercise pretty slow but I had a tendency to rush and swing it especially grouping the mallet 3 to 4 rotation closer together. I’ll also work on note accuracy, this was the first time looking at this exercise so it was bound to happen 3) and 4) This one is a scalular exercise working on the same thing. I also had a tendency to rush this and note accuracy would suffer (not in these recordings specifically) at smaller intervals. Something I like to do is associate the time with movement. So for this exercise instead of thinking slow down (since rushing was the tendency) I thought rotate more. This is because it took more time to do that motion and that slowed me down. I don’t know if this helps anyone but I just wanted to share I like thinking about it this way. Day 116 of #200daysofpractice After I got back from practicing music at school I did some four mallet chop building since I had some time. The first three slides are @leveluppercussion the shapes of scales and permutations book exercises. I chose a permutation from each section (sequential laterals, single independents, and mirror double laterals). I chose 4-3-2-1, 4-1-3-2 (at a faster tempo since there is no lateral motion) , and 3-4-2-1. The exercise consists of first two, last two, the same thing but half the length, then first three, last three, and the full permutation. On the last slide, I just did a broccoli exercise. All these exercises are definitely not rhythmically perfect, there’s some slight swinging and inconsistencies in some places. While I am working to that to get fixed, I’m not too worried about it since I’m just trying to build strength in the hands. But when I am trying to fix rhythm, I try to look at the issues for on a mechanical level, so what exactly is the weakness in my hands that’s preventing me from play it properly. Day 106 of #200daysofpractice Ahh why does instagram crop theseee anyways I just worked on some stuff from Etude 20 . They feel a lot better now that I worked them slow. I swear I can play them in time, but I couldn’t hear them met at all since I didn’t have my headphones! But now I know my tendency is to stretch the rest in 1) and to rush a lot in general in 2) (which that I’m sure won’t be the issue at tempo because I’m struggling to even play consistently at that speed let alone rush it). But yes it feels a lot clearer to be able to define the technique properly slowly. Day 102 of #200daysofpractice The first two videos are (drafts) for part of my wind ensemble audition. At first I was thinking not to share these videos and not to help out the competition I was against, but what does it matter. I think it’s way more beneficial for me to help improve the ensemble than to gatekeep info and be in whatever band. So if you have questions, I’ll try to help! 1) this is the snare excerpt (4-4). The biggest issue was that the mf and f dynamics were almost the same on camera so there can definitely be more difference with those, even though the mezzo forte is accented. Sticks: Freer SGNF – General Orchestral Hornwood™ Signature Model Instrument: Pearl Philharmonic 14x6.5 African Mahogany Concert Snare Drum 2) this is the tambourine except (level 7-4). It’s not perfect (I might end up submitting, but I’d rather get a better recording). The two main things that stuck out to me were 1) the diminuendo to the piano on the knee has a little hiccup where there’s a lack of clarity and 2) the triplets against the knee don’t feel the same and clear every time. For example, the first one sounds the worst and least articulate and the second one sounds the best. Instrument: @blackswamppercussion 10” Double Row Tambourine - TC1 (I believe…correct me if I’m wrong) 3) some work on the first and second line of Ultra Spree SLOWLY at 90 bpm. Day 101 of #200daysofpractice Sorry this is kind of a sad start to the next hundred days, but because of Eid then going to see the musical, I didn’t realize o wouldn’t have a lot of time to record. But when I practice I worked quite a bit on ultra spree for snare and then messing around with some two mallet technique stuff on a practice pad (mostly stick control) and playing around with the differences in technical instruction between front ensemble and my concert percussion work.
