Special thanks to the dc commission on the arts and humanities @thedcarts for facilitating the purchase with a $350,000 grant AND all the amazing people who donated through Rhizome’s fundraising drive. Heading into the long weekend like 💎... Known for its colorful murals and street art, every blank surface in @noma.bid is a potential canvas, even the sides of a truck! Fittingly, this colorful expression is by awesome DC artist @kellytowles, who is also the director and curator of @dcwallsfestival. It’s a celebration of the power of art to create community and improve our neighborhoods. Known then as Pow! Wow! DC, Knowles brought the international mural festival that started in Hawaii in 2010 to DC in 2016. The 10-day event brings local, national, and international artists together to paint larger-than-life murals throughout the NoMa neighborhood. This year’s festival will take place in October in collaboration with @nasa🌌👨‍🚀 DC is filled with incredible street art! Ready to explore? Get in touch for a custom experience🎨 #CuriousCaravan

And I hear there’s a cool new wing in the #Smithsonian Museum of Art I can’t wait to see. It’s dedicated to the amazing #administrativework done by the great artists of the modern era. Some day! It all started almost a year ago when I was wondering if the @dchistory had any flamenco items in its archive. Fast forward to today, and I’m at the Washington History Magazine Release Party with Torcuato Zamora, a local guitar legend who became the subject of my Person of Interest shorter piece in Volume 36. Much research, interviewing, writing and editorial collaboration went into this little piece, which will put flamenco on the record of DC’s amazing rich cultural history. Torcuato delighted today’s guests with 10 minutes of guitar playing in the breezy patio of @rightproperbeer Proper Brewing Company. If you’re a history nerd like me, you’ll love reading these journals. They’re available for purchase online (the most recent volume forthcoming) and also on @jstor_org. Here’s the roundup of full-length features in the magazine: “The latest Washington History engages themes of identity, power, and agency. Joe Lapp opens with a reflection on pioneering housing advocate Kimi Gray. Working with Republicans and Democrats, she spent decades fighting to improve conditions at the Kenilworth Courts and Parkside housing projects. Anne Dobberteen spotlights hidden figures of Washington’s World War II defenses. Women volunteers tracked the capital region’s air traffic and joined the U.S. military’s first mixed-gender unit experiment. The issue concludes with Nikki Grigg’s study of German immigrants, beer branding, and citizenship in late-19th-century DC.” To learn more, visit https://dchistory.org/research/washington-history-magazine/

This week’s Staff Pick Artist of the Week is Barbara Kuebel, who is a UK-based printmaker who drew us in with her large-scale woodcuts depicting tangled bodies in block colours. Her “works are inspired by a very personal perception of situations. I create live sized figures in monochrome colours to reduce myself to what counts and what is necessary. The line is the most important carrier of information and I use my cutting tools for the woodcuts the same way I would use a pencil.” -Kuebel. Starting on June 8th, “MEMORIES AND INSPIRATION: THE KERRY AND C. BETTY DAVIS COLLECTION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ART” opens to the public at the Susquehanna Art Museum, Harrisburg, PA. The exhibition presents sixty-seven selected works from a body of art amassed over thirty-five years. Kerry, a retired mailman, and Betty, a former television news producer, have foregone many comforts to live with drawings, paintings, prints, and sculpture as their principal luxuries.  Their collection includes works by Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Ernest T. Crichlow, Sam Gilliam, Loïs Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Gordon Parks, and Alma Thomas, but Kerry and Betty do not search exclusively for well-known and/or documented artists. Rather, they focus on “the importance of gathering and preserving a spectrum of approaches to the black image in order to console the psyche and contribute to a more authentic articulation of the self.” For more information, visit: https://www.artsandartists.org/exhibitions/memories/ #1-summary (https://www.artsandartists.org/exhibitions/memories/ #1-summary) Image Credit: International Arts and Artists Website #artsandartists #internationalartsandartists #internationalart #internationalartists #artsindc #dcarts #IAA #testuesday

I have two new workshops I'm really excited to tell you about. My last gouache workshop sold out, so on June 10th, I will be teaching my Gouache Basics workshop again at the Loft Gallery in Occoquan. I will show you all of the ways you can use this versatile medium for sketching, studio work and plein air. I created a new series of workshops in Middleburg just for those of you who would like an ongoing painting class, but are unable to commit to a multi-week class. Painting Club is a series of monthly workshops which will begin with a bite sized demonstration. After that, I will help you with new or ongoing projects. The first session will be on June 4th and will focus on working with a limited palette. Upcoming topics in the series will include water soluble oils and composition. For more information about both of these workshops, visit my website: KimTRichards.com or DM me for the link. #gouache #dmvartclass #gouachepainting #paintwithgouache #gouacheclass #dcarts #artistsinmiddleburg #middleburgartclass #occoquanart #occoquanartclass

Evita Peron's rags to riches story is the stuff of legend, and plays and movies. But if all you know about her is from the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical or the Madonna movie, you are in for a wild time at @teatrogala's latest production. "Momia en el Clóset: Evita’s Return" picks up where those stories left off about the former First Lady of Argentina's end, telling the story of what happened to her corpse after she dies. It's a musical about a ghost, but it's not camp fiction or dramatic satire--it's based on actual facts, unbelievable as it seems. Each new revelation is more shocking than the next! For over fifteen years, Peron's body was essentially unaccounted for. The body is moved from secret location to secret location as politicians sought to control the image and narrative of the powerful figurehead. The play is dramatic, and by turns macabre and hilarious, yet it never forgets its historical and political perspectives. As someone who had no idea about the story beforehand, it's a kind of musical documentary. Blending the beats of tango, waltz, and salsa, and the spirit of Argentina with the supernatural, "Mummy" takes audiences on a mesmerizing and fantastical odyssey. As fsscinating as her life was, the story about Peron's death tops it. Evita the sequel is a must-see before it's gone. This type of theatrical storytelling is one of the reasons GALA was one of last year's big winners at the Helen Hayes Awards. In Spanish with English subtitles. 📍GALA Hispanic Theatre // 3333 14th St NW 📆 Thru June 9 💰 $25 - 50 Love theatre? DC TRAUMEDY FESTIVAL, a world first (sorry, Dubai😊), brought to you by Rola Niche Shows and MEI, was CATHARTIC! A wonderfully diverse line-up of comedians who talked about our own trauma and turn pain into punchlines. Diversity isn’t just color. It’s age, background, orientation, identity, neurodiversity, life experiences, ethnicity, size, and more. Oh ya, and we had 2 male comedians. As your DC Traumedian, I felt compelled to make it bigger and proliferate the love and healing. Thanks to everyone who came to our shows and panel this weekend, the journalists who showed up and laughed, the team, the Tetas. Huge thanks to @middleeastinst. Maybe it’s cringe, AND, I can’t tell you how grateful I am and what a privilege this is. #dcccomedy #dcshow #dccomedyfestival #dctraumedyfestival #meievents #dcshows #busboysandpoets #dcartsandhumanities #dcarts #entertaindc #202creates #mentalhealthawareness. Curiouser and curiouser. On yesterday's @dupont_kalorama_mc walk, we noticed these whimsical characters from "Alice in Wonderland" outside the @omansion. Such a wonderful discovery on a rainy day! The statues are part of the unconventional museum-meets-hotel's exhibit “Through the Looking Glass: Exhibition Of Classic Children’s Literature," which brings characters from Lewis Carroll’s classic tale and other childhood favorites to life. Several of the sculptures, including Alice, the Cheshire Cat and the Queen of Hearts, are viewable from the sidewalk in front of the mansion, while others are tucked away in the museum’s secret garden, where you'll find other characters. Visiting the Mansion on O Street and Museum is a bit like visiting Alice in Wonderland in real-life. It's a jam-packed treasure trove of art, memorabilia, 100 rooms, and 80 secret doors where anything not nailed down is for sale. 📍2020 O Street NW 📆 Sun - Mon, 9am - 6pm; Tue - Sat, 9am - 9pm 💰 General admission is $30; proces vary for specialized tours and events Discover more unexpected places in DC with your own custom experience or itinerary; DM to get started. #CuriousCaravan

As the name suggests, "Metamorphes," the new play at @folgerlibrary, is about transformation. It's a fitting pick as the historic theatre nears completion of its own transformation. From the start, the play lives up to its name. Directed by the supremely talented Psalmayene 24, who is doing some of the most exciting theatre in DC, it transforms the timeless tales of Ovid into an all-Black production, the first in Folger's history. From the rich purples, blues and gold in the costumes to the electric African dance  choreography, the setting is firmly rooted in the African diaspora and the Black experience. Presenting through this lens shows that these stories and themes are universal, regardless of race. It’s a welcomed and powerful perspective shift, particularly in these racially fraught days. Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” stretches over 15 books and covers 250 myths, but thankfully, this adaption slims it down to the classics about gods and fallible figures like Midas and Orpheus. Told in a series of interconnected mini-plays about greed, love, lust, jealousy, and pride, it plays like a particularly dishy soap opera. Psalmayene gives the production a contemporary feel by slightly modernizing the language and incorporating various R&B and Black pop hits, like a mashup of James Brown and Michael Jackson. In one scene, Orpheus (Jon Hudson Odom) is portrayed as a rock star with a hype man and groupies. The cast, most playing multiple roles, is excellent across the board, but Odom, who theatergoers will recognize from his roles in “Ain’t No Mo’” and “An Octoroon,” is a standout. And he's got some stellar dance moves, too! Don't let Ovid's origin story or any preconceived notions about the kinds of plays normally staged at Folger put you off. The musty myths you probably last read in high school have been dusted off and given new life. This production has energy, urgency, heart humor, relevance and a bit of sass---you'll love it. 📍Folger Shakespeare Theatre // 201 E Capitol Street SE 📆 Thru June 16 💰 $20–$84 👀 Check out our @dcfray article for ways to score theater tickets to the hottest shows in DC; 🔗 in bio ☝🏾 #CuriousCaravan

Delighted to be featured in an Interview in the Italian publication "L'ArteCheMiPiace" - the interview is both in Italian and if you scroll down in English at this link: Enjoy! Link: https://www.lartechemipiace.com/2024/05/oltre-le-forme-luniverso-emotivo.html A bit from the article/interview: "The visual language used by the artist can be described as a sort of visual poetry, in which shapes and colors blend to create an emotional melody that speaks directly to the heart of the viewer. This visual poetics, imbued with lyricism and suggestion, aims to arouse in users an aesthetic experience that goes beyond superficial contemplation. Through her work, the artist aims to create deep and lasting interactions with her audience. The goal is not only to communicate a personal message, but to trigger an empathetic dialogue that can resonate in the soul of anyone who encounters the work. In this sense, the artist's art becomes a bridge that unites inner worlds, a tangible reflection of the infinite complexity of art and single creative thought." The title of this one is: Fear Ignored. The concept is about the result of the extremes that occur when we are fearful human beings. The eye symbolizes the looking away, again because of being to fearful to do something about it. The ductwork symbolizes the industrialists who make money off of the suffering of others. The burnt wood symbolizes the destruction caused by the unchecked fear. Previous productions of Mary Zimmerman’s Tony award-winning play Metamorphoses famously featured water as a central element, with actors dancing in a giant pool on stage. At Folger Theatre, local director Psalmayene 24 takes a different approach, drawing in audiences with an exploration of Greek myth through the lens of Black culture. Based on the classic Ovid poem, Zimmerman’s text modernizes several vignettes from Greek myth, including the stories of King Midas as well as Orpheus and Eurydice. With 11 actors all playing multiple roles, the drama unfolds like a series of sketches—some comic, some dramatic—from the classical period. Metamorphoses runs through June 16 at Folger Theatre. Congratulations to Julia Chon (@kimchi.juice)! Her piece “I Gave A Lot Of Water To My Flower Of Laughter (단지)” has been acquired into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. We look forward to welcoming you in residency with us this fall. — Repost from @smithsonianacm DC-area artist Julia Chon, also known as Kimchi Juice, uses a traditional Korean earthenware jar known as onggi pot as her canvas for painting a vibrant floral motif. The pot is typically used to store fermented sauces, and often passed down from generation to generation. Yellow chrysanthemums are used in funerary ceremonies in Korea, where they symbolize the cycle of life. Chon’s work explores the relationship between cultural tradition and generational identity in the Korean diaspora. #SmithsonianAANHPI — #TheNicholsonProject #TNPArtists #TNPArtistResidency #ArtistResidency #WashingtonDC #DC #DMV #SoutheastDC #Ward7DC #Ward7 #202Creates #ACreativeDC #ByThings #DCArts #AANHPI
