NHS Grampian produced the โI am Deafโ card in 2019. The card provides a way for you to share your personal communication preference to staff. It slips easily in your wallet and you can present this to staff when attending your healthcare appointment. As Deaf Awareness Week 2024 draws to a close I wanted to share a few from a couple of weeks back when @englanddeafrugby played @walesdeafrugby at Goldington Road, home of Bedford Blues. The match was more competitive than perhaps the 51-17 score line suggests, and I found it interesting to see the small adjustments made to make the match work for all. Itโs definitely the most animated I have ever seen a ref. Letโs talk about why deaf childrenโs achievement doesnโt match that of their hearing peers. The average reading age of a deaf child leaving school at 16 is 9 years old. The average GCSE grade of a deaf child is 1.3 grades below the average grade of a hearing child. Only 65% of deaf people are employed, compared to 79% of the general population. So why is there a gap? Language Deprivation Syndrome! When a child does not have high quality access to language during the first few years of life, while their brains are primed to learn language, they have irreversible cognitive difficulties! And studies show that deaf children who have full access to a language from birth perform similarly to hearing children with no learning difficulties in cognitive tests. 6th May to 12th May is deaf awareness week. A cause very close to my heart. My grandmum (dadโs mum) had lost hearing in last years of her life. It used to break my heart seeing her speak to my uncle & aunty who were abroad on phone & not understanding what they were saying. At the time we had no mobiles, only landline. Or when we said something she did not understand. I kept on thinking of her today. Did you know people who are deaf they are more prone to get dementia. As they pull out of life & detach themselves from ppl around them. Hearing aid - makes all the noise around them loud & not just what we speak to them. Not to shout when you speak with them, just speak clearing & slowly so they can gauge what you are trying to say by reading your lips & hand gesture. Did you know families of ppl who suffer from deafness have to pay to learn sign language - I was so surprised to hear that. But good news is that sign language will be part of GCSE curriculum & fingers crossed - learning sign language will become free of cost someday. How can you charge to learn sign language - it should be free. I had tears in my eyes when I went for this awareness programme I could not stop thinking about my grandmum. Prayers wherever she is - she is good . #deafawarenessweek2024

Today we continued with the second of our Open Days at the Pulborough Ear Care Centre. Offering free hearing tests, hearing healthcare advice and information about the latest hearing aid technology from Signia Hearing. There is still time to take advantage of our FREE Hearing Tests as we will be continuing this offer throughout the rest of May and June. Last weekend a few of our coaches and athletes took our new communications book for a test drive! These widgets (simply drawn colourful symbols) allow a person to communicate with those around them without speaking. Itโs Deaf Awareness Week. Many of our deaf pupils use radio aids which help overcome problems such as background noise and distance between the child and the speaker. We were really excited to visit Philip Southcote Schoolโs DT department to design and create vinyl skins to personalise our radio aids. Theyโre so colourful!
