Almost everyone has committed a microaggression at some point, but not everyone is used to being called out and responding gracefully. Accepting criticism can be hard, even for those enthusiastic about unlearning biases. Therefore, it's vital to treat these confrontations as learning moments, not personal attacks. Here's what to keep in mind if someone approaches you concerned or hurt by something you've said or done: 1. Avoid reacting defensively: Criticism is tough, especially when it's for something you didn't realize, like interacting with a colleague in a wheelchair without infantilizing them. 2. Listen sincerely: Avoid phrases like โI didnโt mean itโ or โI was just making a joke.โ Instead, strive to empathize and understand their perspective. 3. Acknowledge your impact: Regardless of your intent, recognize and own up to the pain you've caused them. It's a promise to be more thoughtful and intentional in the future. 4. Apologize, but donโt expect forgiveness: The best way to make amends is to educate yourself and be more cautious in the future. 5. Ask questions, but donโt expect answers: If appropriate, ask about their experiences with microaggressions. Without knowing a single word of French (other than 'bonjour'), initially, I felt completely lost in school. Unable to read in class, my teacher told me I read French like it was English. Unable to communicate with most students or teachers, I felt excluded. However, I was fortunate to have an amazing class teacher who took a special interest in me. Recognising my strengths, he placed me in a higher-level English class, highlighted my achievements and provided constructive feedback privately. He always encouraged me to speak, even when my French was far from perfect and took active steps to reduce the barriers I faced. Thanks to his incredible support, I was recognised by the school as the most progressed student in my class. From struggling to pronounce 'bonjour' to being celebrated for my progress, my journey was transformative. Just imagine if our team leads could recognise the potential and challenges of every team member and work towards supporting them in similar ways.
