brain thoughts 🧠 💭 (and baby me at my kindergarten graduation 👩🎓) • I’d be lying if I said my life is even slightly like what kid me thought my life would be like at 22. I’d be lying if I said it isn’t hard seeing people graduate. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t jealous. There’s the physical pain that comes along with chronic illness, but then there’s the mental turmoil that can hurt just as bad. • Today has been a day where I’ve really felt that grief. I often find my brain telling myself that everything happens for a reason, because the thought that all of this suffering has been for nothing is an idea I don’t even want to contemplate. • I feel like I’m just floating in the void; I’m existing, I’m surviving, but I feel so lost. And I so wish my life could be what my 6-year-old self thought it would be. • Kind of a downer of a post today, but I needed to get some of these thoughts out in the way I’m most comfortable with: writing. There’s something about writing that can help soothe my soul, or at least help process everything going on in my mind. • May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so remember to care for not only your body but your brain. Day 9 of raising awareness for @ehlers.danlos syndrome and it’s #throwbackthursday 🧡 - These are some very very special memories I feel so lucky to share! - Learning Ariel Hoop and doing my first ever photoshoot was an ACHIEVEMENT! When I tell you I screamed when I saw what they looked like - I cannot believe that’s me 😭🥹 - Bathing with elephants in Thailand, such a precious moment. But please make sure if you do this, you’re visiting an actual elephant sanctuary and don’t get mis lead like I did at the time 🙈🧡 - Meeting my childhood best friend for the first time in YEARS half way across the world in Bali! I spent ages waiting for that moment and when it arrived, it was so lovely 🥰 - Omg seeing the The opera house in Australia - this was a crazy moment. I was very home sick but I stayed down under for 5 months and pushed through those feelings and had the most incredible journey! - Making a dream come true and seeing one of my favourite animals in the wild - The Manta Ray 🥹 I genuinely cried, it was amazing. - Visiting Rome for the first time and seeing the colosseum! And then falling so in love with the city I ended up going back four times so far 😅 - Taking a trip to Iceland and experiencing one of the most amazing countries I’ve ever been too. Not to mention the Blue Lagoon was the most incredible place. - Going scuba diving for the fist time and loving every second of it. Perfect way to start the day! @quakeroatsuk @phdnutrition Every morning my breakfast is Quaker Protein Porridge Pot with Salted Caramel protein powder (recently either Diet Whey or 100% Plant - both from PhD) On the purée diet, I've not been making it into a cake anymore, just microwave so there is a slight skin form on too, but you can see underneath it is still moist... and delicious! Unfortunately, I get through it so quickly (as I also use it with my lunch). But it is a necessary luxury item, as it helps me to maintain my health in recovery, as best I can, and with the PN feed not covering near to my daily needs, it shows that I am able to absorb at least some of this, as it is a key component in my diet! With a high output stoma, it can be hard to know what I am absorbing, so ensuring I have sufficient protein is very important in my daily routine - especially in order to not deplete my muscles and still with the aim to become stronger! In the early days of our diagnosis our focus was steadfast. Our child would walk one day. Every topic the experts threw at us we dove in head first. My mind was a sponge. Tell me about all the things - Gait trainers, PT, SMO’s, AFO’s and DMO suits. It may have taken me a minute to research and wrap my head around each new idea. But eventually we would come around and we would try it. We tried everything we could. Whether or not insurance would approve it. We would find a way. It was ingrained in us that this should be our focus. He will walk! And then we would be happy. We would be complete. But guess what? I wish I had paid more attention to other areas of concern when he was younger. I wish I knew that many children with his diagnosis would go on to have behavioral concerns. I wish I didn’t skim through the research when it mentioned a link between behavior and cerebellum. I wish I had realized that walking isn’t the end goal. And our child is worth so much more than whether or not he can walk independently. So I have been drawing and colouring a lot lately and because I can't just sit and relax, plus this hemiplegic migraine doesn't seem to be getting better (it's been 8 weeks, like for real, cmon!!!) and the meds just seem to be adding symptoms I've decided to do something with all the drawings. Today I got to speak to 3rd year medical students at @ohiostatemed about living with a physical disability and parenting kids with autism and intellectual disability. I was part of a panel with a self advocate and another parent. We discussed barriers within the educational and medical systems, and how providers can create a more patient-centered practice for people with autism and intellectual disability. The students asked thoughtful questions and I'm hoping they'll use the takeaways from today in their future practices because no matter their specialty, they'll interact with disabled people.
