Les rues autrefois grouillantes de vie étaient maintenant des tranchées où se livraient des batailles silencieuses contre l’inhumanité de la nature. La tour Eiffel, autrefois symbole de grandeur, était désormais une sentinelle solitaire émergeant des vagues dorées. Les survivants s’étaient installés dans les bâtiments hauts, devenus des refuges temporaires contre l’avancée inexorable du désert. Ils passaient leurs journées à bâtir des digues de fortune, utilisant tout ce qui leur tombait sous la main - planches, vieux meubles, sacs de sable - pour ériger des barrières contre l’envahisseur granuleux. Chaque nuit, les vents hurlaient, emportant des tonnes de sable et détruisant leurs efforts. Mais chaque matin, les habitants se relevaient, déterminés à continuer la lutte. Ils étaient peu nombreux, mais leur volonté était inflexible. Ils avaient appris à survivre dans ce nouvel environnement hostile, à tirer parti de chaque ressource disponible. Au cœur de cet enfer de sable, ils découvrirent une oasis inattendue : le jardin des Tuileries, miraculeusement préservé. Cet îlot de verdure leur redonna espoir et devint le centre de leur résistance, une forteresse de vie contre la mort omniprésente du désert. ⛈️📰Our first stormy news in this edition of #newsdigest30 🇦🇪🐪Who would have ever though that the desert city of Dubai would be flooding but then it did. And it was NOT because of cloud seeding. 🤷What are we talking about? • On 16 April 2024, heavy rains caused floods in the United Arab Emirates, affected cities of mainly Dubai and Sharjah. It received the amount of rainfall it typically gets in 2 years in a period of 24 hours. • According to the National Center for Meteorology, this was the country's heaviest rainfall recorded in 75 years, since record keeping started. ❓What caused this? • The heavy rainfall was caused by a storm that hit the region. The intensity of the low pressure system that caused the storm was exacerbated by warmer temperatures that we are seeing thanks to climate change • There was some speculation that this heavy rainfall was caused by cloud seeding - a process in which chemicals are implanted into clouds to increase rainfall. Die Gruppe 7 der weißen Wacht haben die Ehre, bei der Zeremonie der Volljährigkeit dabei zu sein. Passend gekleidet, erreichen sie den Tempel von Ghogzhul. Nur wenige Auserwählte dürfen an dieser Zeremonie der Prinzessin teilhaben. Doch während die Zeremonie im vollen Gange war, hörten einige der Gruppe von draußen Tumult. Die Gruppe schlich sich leise raus und bemerkten etwas Schreckliches, nicht einmal jetzt wo der Tag doch so gut begonnen hatte, haben sie Ruhe vor den Schattenkreaturen. Sie wurden überfallen, ein Hinterhalt, also zogen sie ihre Waffen und machten sich kampfbereit. Einige Zeit später ertönten auch Schmerzensschreie aus dem Inneren des Tempels, einige hatten sich wohl als Orks getarnt, waren aber in wirklichkeit Schattenkreaturen von Karzhak. Angeführt wurden sie von einer Tengudame, wie sich später herausstellte war dies die Schwester von Gregor. The walled city in the desert, home of the Khan, was illuminated, and heaving with tourists - mainly from Central Asia. Shops and stalls were still open selling puppets, fur hats, and ubiquitous "silks". Khiva was an important stop on the Silk Road, and its notorious trade in Russian slaves put the khanate in Russia's sights, and raised the stakes during the Great Game. This small, walled city (called Ichon Qala) lies in the middle of nowhere, sandwiched between the Kyzylkum and Karakum deserts, just 5km from the border with Turkmenistan We dined on a terrace in view of the spectacular, unfinished, blue-tiled minaret - the Kalta Minor. It's all in the jaunty angle! I remember this hat-maker's trading dome (the second trading dome) in Bokhara, which sold fur hats and astrakhan coats for the freezing winters. It remains, relatively unchanged. There used to be 5 trading domes in the city - profiting from Bokhara's position on the Silk Road, and each was dedicated to a craft (the third for example, was the Jewellers' area). Today, just three remain, selling a jumble of goods (as in the second pic - of the first trading Dome). Shops selling ikats and textiles of varying quality also proliferate in the numerous caravanserais, in former homes, and in pedestrianised streets of the old town. The focus on tourism has totally changed the character of the city, which has lost the authenticity that so beguiled me 22 years ago - its sense of mystery, intrigue, and Eastern romance. Bukhara the Holy is now more of a shrine to Mammon.
