Tefik and Anita Musoski have served among the Roma in North Macedonia for over 20 years, and more recently, serve among the deaf community as well. They have learned of the struggles deaf people face, for whom there is little awareness and a lack of tolerance in society. There are also barriers to a deaf person's spiritual life. In church, they cannot hear the preached gospel and unless somebody signs for them, they cannot understand what is being taught. Have you ever experienced Stigma? Stigma and Shame are inextricably linked. Society expects people to fit into a box (social norms), and oftentimes stigmatises people who don’t fit into that box. We see this when derogatory stereotypes are used, oftentimes against marginalised communities. When you experience stigma you feel disconnected from society, rejected, and this results in feelings of shame. Erving Goffman didn’t coin the term stigma, but he was the first to conceptualise stigma in his book “Notes on the management of spoiled identity”. The company also declared a final cash dividend of Rs6.5 per share. Despite a 42.1% year-over-year drop in revenue to Rs55.07 billion from Rs95.09 billion, the cost of sales fell by 42.5%, resulting in a gross profit decline of 37.1% year-over-year to Rs4.51 billion. However, gross margins improved to 8.19% from 7.53%. Other income slightly decreased by 3.0% year-over-year to Rs2.25 billion. Distribution and marketing costs rose 1.4% year-over-year to Rs914.88 million, and administrative expenses increased by 12.0% year-over-year to Rs1.48 billion. Other expenses dropped significantly by 92.0% year-over-year to Rs393.64 million. Finance costs surged by 252.2% year-over-year to Rs1.22 billion due to higher interest rates. The company paid lower taxes amounting to Rs418.85 million, a 75.7% year-over-year decrease. My birthday week included lots of lovely gifts, a fun family trip to Sheffield and a few days watching documentaries with my eldest boy who had a hard time recovering from a viral infection. The normalization of greed in society has indeed reached a point where people who make or amass a lot of money are looked up to and emulated. Social media platforms often give these people a stage to show off their riches and lavish, often unsustainable lifestyle, without facing backlash. Instead, they attract followers who want to live just like them. It’s like a cycle where the more they show off, the more followers they get, and the more followers they get, the more money they make. The desire for a luxurious life has become very pervasive, fueling a culture of consumption and materialism. What we forget is the manner in which wealth is accumulated most of the time. Big fortunes are usually built by taking more than giving. They are gained through exploitation, whether of labor, resources, or markets, less through sharing and distribution. Margins and profits have become increasingly bigger and bigger. The costs, e.g. for going to the movies, theaters, concerts and sports games, have gone up so much that many of us can’t afford to do these things anymore. It’s sad because these used to be simple pleasures that everyone could enjoy. With no cap to how much profit anyone can make, unchecked greed comes at the expense of fellow humans and the environment. The cycle of greed creates a challenge to a sustainable future for all. Therefore, it is up to each of us to recognize our responsibility and extend it beyond self-serving interests to serve the greater good. Rather than perpetuating inequality and constantly chasing after more, we should remember that the power and wealth of people at the top comes from the support of the masses. It’s the collective efforts of ordinary people that can shift the balance of power and shape a society that values people over possessions and focuses on genuine well-being not only of a few but of everyone.
