My issue was stim drinking excess liquids so much that I developed bladder problems. I chewed on my prism pendant 5 to 6 hours a day and it helped me train myself into lessening the amount I was stim drinking. Thus helping me get some relief. I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2020. I had a couple-year long career in case management, harm reduction, therapy, and social work, which was rewarding but drove me into the ground and didn’t give me the time to properly care for myself. I was suffering from autistic burnout (pre-diagnosis) and the problem was worsened by my frustration with my burnout symptoms impacting my ability to “function like normal”. After taking a few months off to move back home and focus on my health, I was diagnosed (at 25 years old) with Autism. My diagnosis made me kinder on myself and more understanding of my challenges in light of the new diagnosis, and after learning to work with (as opposed to against) my brain I am now looking into doing Harm Reduction work (in direct service and policy) and potentially pursuing a PhD in Public Policy. I still don’t “function like normal”, but who the hell wants ‘normal’ anyway ! In this episode, Vas shares about their experiences with substance use, ways society can provide support and direction in harm reduction. Had to share this because it made me so mad! At Brancaster beach yesterday watching the world go by while my daughter and husband were playing football. This lovely little boy wandered past me, stimming whilst holding an awesome bright pink spade - my kind of spade! He went past us to where a big family had their ‘camp’ set up but they were all playing cricket so there were only 2 kids playing on the rocks, say around 12 years old. The little boy simply walked over to their set up and looked in one of the picnic baskets, whilst continuing to stim but doing absolutely nothing that should have bothered anyone! Within seconds the mother of the group came over and said to the little boy ‘Can I help you?’ - he didn’t answer and just continued on his way with his spade, not realising she was actually being quite confrontational. This ‘mother’ then proceeded to allow her two children to mimic the sounds the little boy was making, whilst calling him a freak and strange - my blood was boiling and everything in me wanted to go over to her and reprimand her for her behaviour but I have my little one to think of. This ignorance I have no time for, everyone is different, has their own quirks and these should be accepted, especially in our kids, whether ND or not, let them be who they want to be without ridicule. We have to change the attitudes of people in society and I wish I had educated that women so she could be aware of the everyday challenges our kids face and more importantly understand how incredible they are! I feel lucky to not live in an ignorant bubble, like these small minded people we come across! #autismawareness #autism

For Autism Month we are sharing stories from our community! Thank you Becca for sharing! “I’m Becca. I’m 31 years old and I was diagnosed with autism at the age of 30. My entire life I felt like an “outsider” but I never knew why I wasn’t like everyone else. I was bullied as a child and even treated poorly as an adult, especially when I was working. I struggled immensely with my mental health as well as trauma, and my struggles were at an all time high in adulthood, five years into my career was my lowest point where I ended up becoming unable to continue working full-time and then completely unable to work at all. I was misdiagnosed with bipolar and BPD and it never felt like it was the correct diagnosis. I got on disability and attempted working off and on throughout the years and never was able to keep or maintain a job anymore. It was a couple of years ago when I talked to my psych provider about not feeling that my diagnoses were correct and she agreed. I had an autism assessment last year and was then diagnosed with autism. It was finally a diagnosis that made sense and the answer that actually gave me clarity and reassurance that I wasn’t broken, I am autistic and that’s okay!” Check out @thespecialinterestpod now! About The Film . After receiving my autism diagnosis (at age 31) I went through a period of processing, researching and talking to other neurodivergent people and felt very strongly that I wanted to make films / art that reflected the conversations I was having. Stimming became a focus for me because many of us have felt the need to hide, repress or minimise our stimming. I wanted to turn these feelings of shame into ones of celebration. It was important to me that the film visually represented different types of stimming so I invited three neurodivergent friends (Marisa Crane, Kofi Gyamfi and Nicola Smith) to be in front of camera and work with me on the project. I am forever thankful to each of them for sharing their stimming on film, for the conversations we had throughout the project and for their continued support as the film reaches new audiences. . I was diagnosed with autism when I was twelve years old. Due to also being chronically ill since infancy, my path to diagnosis was not very linear. Psychology has been one of my special interests for many years now, and I’m currently in grad school working on my MA/EdS in School Psychology, so I feel very lucky to be able to study, do research, and potentially work in a field that is aligned with my special interest! I also particularly enjoy that I get to work directly with children who are also on the spectrum! My other special interest is making music in GarageBand! I started doing that during my third year of undergrad (in 2020), but I tend not to share the music that I make very often, partly because I’m never really sure if it’s good or not (lol), but also because I mostly just enjoy keeping it for myself to listen to. I especially enjoy making covers of songs & reworking them to change up the melody or reshaping them into a completely different genre. This was the first song that I ever worked on in GarageBand! He was 59 when he had his first conversation with another autistic person, and that experience made everything in his life finally click into place. As a result of that revelation, he started and produces A Team, a podcast about the thrills and challenges of living with autism. Now in its 4th season, thousands of people in over 50 countries listen to it weekly. At least one clinical psychologist in New Zealand credits A Team with helping patients overcome depression and suicidal thoughts due to a late in life autism diagnosis. In this episode, Robert talks about growing up without the autistic language and knowledge we now have. He shares his authentic autistic self and the journey that has brought him here.
