~ Erasmus Weaver ~ We have ANOTHER #harbordefensehappybirthday ! Today, we honor US Army Coast Artillery legend Major General Erasmus Morgan Weaver, Jr, born (Tues) May 23rd, 1854 in Lafayette, Indiana. He attends the US Military Academy at West Point, graduating on June 16th, 1875, and commissioning into the Artillery as a 2nd Lieutenant. Due to outstanding prowess in technical fields, he served as an instructor at the Western Reserve College, OH, the Citadel, and West Point. He also served as a military instructor for high schools in the Boston area; with the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, he helps raise volunteer forces in Massachusetts. He then commands a number of coast defense posts. From 1900-08, he serves on a variety of critical posts and boards, including: Dep’t of Artillery, Chemistry and Explosives at Ft Monroe, VA; Board of Ordnance and Fortification; Board on Revision of Coast Artillery Drill Regulations; Artillery Inspector (Atlantic Div.); Senior Assistant to Chief of Artillery, and part of the General Staff Corps. THEN, he became the very first Chief of the Militia (Nat’l Guard) Bureau. If that’s not enough, he’s appointed as the second Chief of Coast Artillery in 1911, taking over from Ft Hancock, NJ hero Maj. Gen Arthur Murray. He serves until May 1918, during which time he helps the Army plan for inevitable involvement of WWI. Retiring in May of 1918 with over FORTY years of service, he passes away on Nov. 13, 1920, and is buried in Arlington. Most fittingly, his grave is inscribed with the French “Tout Bien Ou Rien;” meaning “Do It Well Or Not At All.” This proud Coast Artilleryman’s legacy doesn’t end there. With War Department General Order No. 13 in 1922, the Iroquois Point Military Reservation on Keahi Point, outside of Pearl Harbor, became “Fort Weaver.” It has one massive emplacement: Battery Williston, with two 16-inch caliber M1919 guns. Four 155 guns were added in 1935. Sadly, all traces of the Fort have been destroyed, obliterated by a post-war housing development. The Fort may be gone, but General Weaver’s incredible legacy of service and the Fort that carried his name are in the safest of hands, here.

This brief report, penned on 12 April 1864 by Captain Charles W. Abbott of the 47th Pennsylvania's Company K—three days after the Battle of Pleasant Hill, from the U.S. Army of the Gulf’s encampment at Grand Ecore, Louisiana, documented a significant hardship faced by Union Army troops when they were suddenly ordered into combat—the unanticipated loss of unit-related supplies and personal belongings. That same report also presented key details about his company’s movements before and after its most recent battle, as well as its post-battle casualty status. His company had barely gotten back to camp after surviving the brutal combat of the Battle of Sabine Cross Roads during the Union’s 1864 Red River Campaign across Louisiana when his men were expected to suck it up, turn around and march back toward the enemy for what would ultimately turn into the Battle of Pleasant Hill, Louisiana later that day—9 April 1864. He was Captain Charles William Abbott, and he was the commanding officer of Company K—the second to have headed “the all-German company” that had been recruited for service with the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in August 1861 by Captain George Junker, who had been killed during the Battle of Pocotaligo in October 1862. Unlike his predecessor, though, Captain Abbott would turn out to be a survivor of multiple battles and would later be commissioned as a lieutenant-colonel and appointed as second-in-command of the 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers. WISDOM WEDNESDAY: NISEI SOLDIERS OF WWII "Americanism is not and has never been a matter of race or color. Americanism is a matter of mind and heart." - President Franklin Delano Roosevelt Despite the explosion of flagrant racism towards Japanese-Americans after the start of WWII, many U.S.-born Japanese-Americans volunteered to go to war in defense of the country they called home. Daniel K. Inouye, a member of the all-Nisei 442nd Regimental Combat Team and later a U.S. Senator, recalled the attitude of his father before he deployed: "My father just looked straight ahead, and I looked straight ahead, and then he cleared his throat and said, 'America has been good to us. It has given me two jobs. It has given you and your sisters and brothers education. We all love this country. Whatever you do, do not dishonor your country. Remember – never dishonor your family. And if you must give your life, do so with honor.' I knew exactly what he meant. I said, 'Yes, sir. Good-bye." #USArmy #TRADOC #WWII #JapaneseAmericanHistory #Nisei #WWIIHistory #WW2 #WW2History #WisdomWednesday #AAPIHeritageMonth #AAPI #USArmy #USArmyHistory #MilitaryHistory

Little Bob with Task Force 3-08 (Operation Athena Rotation 6) Battle Group – 3rd Battalion The Royal Canadian Regiment Battle Group 2009. He had another dog friend named O.D. When we got on site, everyone was burning their garbage in a shell scrape (a shallow hole) in the middle of the compound. Seeing a flaming box whip by in the wind was a common occurrence, until I took chunks of wall left over from creating the firing positions and built a proper burn pit. Sadly no bbq around the burn pit haha. If you ever find yourself inside the Woodhaven Boulevard Subway Station to catch the M or the R train, you need to check out the Lost Battalion Columns, just inside the turnstiles at the Queens Boulevard/LIE entrance. These nine station support beams, covered in stainless steel and stained glass, were installed in 1996 and designed by artist Pablo Tauler. They are meant to serve as a memorial to the ill-fated World War I soldiers of the Lost Battalion, who, according to the MTA site, were " a group of World War I soldiers, mostly New Yorkers, who were lost in battle. Pablo Tauler uses materials that eerily suggests the Argonne Forest where the soldiers met their fate. Muscular steel slabs evoke armaments glass refracts light, and organically shaped iron forms twist like branches." This brief description doesn't really do the Lost Battalion justice. "Lost" means that at first they were actually lost, not dead - HQ wasn't exactly sure where the battalion was. The 554 men had become surrounded by the Germans, and after six days of hardship, including lack of food and water and being shelled by their own forces, about 200 men were rescued. The rest were killed, missing or taken prisoner. "Never in Finer Company: The Men of the Great War's Lost Battalion" by Edward G. Lengel, is a great book if you want to learn more, though I'm sure there's plenty of others. There's also a 2001 movie (which was actually pretty good!) with Ricky Schroeder starring as MAJ Charles Whittlesey, who was awarded the Medal of Honor for leading the battalion through that hardship. Sadly, Whittlesey committed suicide three years later. It was said during his funeral, that his death "was in reality a battle casualty and that he met his end as much in the line of duty as if he had fallen by a German bullet." #lostbattalion #mta #wwi #worldwarone #doughboy #argonneforest #queensny #queensnyc #neverinfinercompany #dacapopress #historybook #warhistory #wwihistory #militaryhistory #usarmyhistory #77thdivision #libertydivision #woodhaven #woodhavenny

August 6, 1945, Camp Pickett [now Fort Barfoot] VA: my maternal grandpa, Sergeant Harry Haller, a forward observer with the U.S. Army's 17th Field Artillery Observation Battalion's HQ Battery, writes home to his girlfriend, my grandma Florence Ramsden. Harry was at Camp Pickett recovering after being s h o t in the ankle while surveying the Ludendorff bridge before the Battle of Remagen in Germany. Prior to this, he helped plan and execute the D-Day landings, disembarking at Omaha Beach, Sector Dog Red, on D-Day +2. The letter's first page, shown here, reads: "Dearest Florence, I wouldn't doubt that right now you are having a friendly little chat with Harry S. Truman himself. I hope you can talk him into getting me a discharge. I hope that you girls are having a pleasant weekend in Washington and that your feet won't get too sore. Don't forget to tell me all about what you did in your next letter. There's not much new here to write you about - I'm always waiting for something here it seems. Once it was the shores, now it's the Colonel I'm waiting for. I don't know what day he's coming this week, but I hope it will be early around Monday or Sunday. When he tells me o show him how I can walk - I'll do so well as I can - even if it k i l l s me I'll try to walk with as little of a limp as possible." That last sentence is incredibly relatable. Book Review by Peter L. Belmonte Ward, Kyle Roy. In the Shadow of Glory: The Thirteenth Minnesota in the Spanish-American and Philippine-American Wars, 1898-1899. St. Cloud, MN: North Star Press of St. Cloud, Inc., 2000. Hardcover, maps, illus., 214pp. Considering the many state volunteer units that served both stateside and overseas during the Spanish-American War and Philippine War, it’s good to see unit histories being published a century after those conflicts. In this book, Kyle Roy Ward, who in 2000 was assistant professor of history and political science at Vincennes University in Indiana, brings us the history of the 13th Minnesota Infantry Regiment. Ward covers the regiment fully and chronologically, from its recruitment to its training period in Minnesota and San Francisco, to its deployment to the Philippines, and then back to San Francisco and Minnesota, from May 1898 to October 1899. Ward’s focus is on the regiment’s collective obsession with earing fame and glory on the battlefield. He implies that a desire to overcome the stigma supposedly laid upon their generation by Union veterans of the Civil War was a prime motive in enlisting. Of course, studies have shown there was, as there always has been, a variety of reasons why young men enlist to serve their country in times of war. Short of a complete, specific survey, it’s difficult to attribute any one overwhelming impetus to enlist for any regiment. Ward shows how the hope for glory faded into disgust with the policies that kept them in the Philippines in what they felt was a fruitless pursuit of victory. "While the army labored to build the upper dam [near Alexandria, Louisiana in May 1864], the navy … worked to lighten the loads on the trapped gunboats” during the Union's Red River Campaign, according to archaeologist and military historian Steven Smith, Ph.D. From May 10 through 12, the remaining gunboats above the rapids struggled through the upper shoals to the pool behind the main dam. Yet another dam had to be built to refloat a gunboat that got stuck during this passage. Then on the twelfth of May, the Mound City, the largest gunboat of the fleet, ran for the gap in the main dam. The previous scene was repeated, with thousands lining the banks to watch the excitement. Marching bands played the ‘Star Spangled Banner’ and the ‘Battle Cry for Freedom [sic, ‘Battle Cry of Freedom’].’ Like the Lexington before it, as the Mound City hit the gap, it ground against the rocky river bottom, and then shot through. The next day all of the trapped vessels lay safely below the rapids." According to archaeologist and military historian, Steven D. Smith, Ph.D.: "Historical accounts indicate that lumber from Alexandria [Louisiana] mills, homes, and barns was quickly stripped for use in building the cribs [of Bailey's Dam in May 1864]. Bricks, stone, and even machinery were used to fill and anchor the cribs. Additionally, historical illustrations show that iron bars were placed vertically in the four corners of each crib, to provide a supporting framework…. On the east (Pineville) bank, there were no town buildings to strip for lumber but there was, quite conveniently, a forest. With abundant trees available, Bailey constructed a ‘self-loading’ tree dam [for the Union Army during the Red River Campaign]. According to historical diagrams, trees were stacked lengthwise with the flow of the stream. The upstream treetops were anchored to the river bottom with stones. The downstream trunks were raised higher than the upstream tops by alternating layers of other logs running perpendicular to, or across, the stream. This technique presented a dam face of logs angled upward with the stream flow. As the river was held back by the log face, the water pressure actually made the dam stronger or ‘self-loading.’" Learn more about the purpose of Bailey's Dam: https://47thpennsylvaniavolunteers.com/2024/05/07/building-baileys-dam-on-the-red-river-alexandria-louisiana-late-april-to-mid-may-1864/ Illustration: The tree dam designed by Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Bailey for the Red River near Alexandria, Louisiana, spring 1864 (Joseph Bailey, “Report on the Construction of the Dam Across the Red River,” 1865, public domain). #americancivilwar #redrivercampaign #alexandria #louisiana #unionarmy #civilwarhistory #engineers #usarmyhistory #unionarmy #1864 #armyengineers #engineeringhistory #redriver #damconstruction #americanhistory #america250 #infantry #military

The community celebrated the first anniversary since the Fort Hood army post in Texas was renamed to honor the U.S. Army’s first Hispanic four-star general Richard Edward Cavazos. Numerous local elected officials, veterans, and advocates spoke on the decorated Korean and Vietnam wars vet’s legacy during the remembrance ceremony at the American Legion Harrisburg Post 472 in Magnolia Park in Houston, Texas on Wednesday. “General Cavazos, he was a distinguished servant and an exemplary leader,” said Texas Rep. Christina Morales during the speech. For retired Texas Army National Guard major general Rick Noriega, the renamed Fort Cavazos, amplifies Cavazos’ legacy and serves as a “springboard to see how much more work” the community has to do locally to recognize local heroes. The construction of Bailey’s Dam near Alexandria, Louisiana during the spring of 1864 was described by Union Army Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Bailey in a post-construction report to his superiors: "…. Immediately after our army received a check at Sabine Cross-Roads and the retreat commenced I learned through reliable sources that the Red River was rapidly falling. I became assured that by the time the fleet could reach Alexandria there would not be sufficient water to float the gun-boats over the falls. It was evident, therefore, that they were in imminent danger. Believing, as I did, that their capture or destruction would involve the destruction of our army, the blockade of the Mississippi, and even greater disasters to our cause, I proposed to Major-General Franklin on the 9th of April, previous to the battle of Pleasant Hill, to increase the depth of water by means of a dam, and submitted to him my plan of the same...." Peacetime US Army uniforms and gear of the Cold War always has had a special place in my heart, especially when it's done by the book. Book Review by Peter L. Belmonte Field, Ron. Spanish-American War 1898. Brassey’s History of Uniform. London: Brassey’s, 1998. Hardcover, illus., 144pp. In this book, uniform historian Ron Field presents an examination of the uniforms, arms, and equipment of the fighting forces in the Spanish-American War. After reviewing the history of the conflict, to include combat in Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, Field gives descriptions of the forces involved. In addition to written descriptions of the items, Field includes many photographs of men, equipment, and uniforms in addition to more recent photographs of items found in collections and museums. The text and photographs cover U.S. forces (to include all branches of the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps), Spanish forces, and Philippine insurgent forces. Although this is an older book, it is typical of Brassey’s publications and highly recommended to anyone interested in uniforms, equipment, and the material culture history of the Spanish-American War. #usarmy #usarmyhistory #spanishamericanwar #armyhistorybooks #usarmyhistorybooks #militaryhistory #militaryhistorybooks #philippineinsurrection #philippinewar Please see my Amazon author’s page at: https://www.amazon.com/stores/Peter-L.-Belmonte/author/B00QXIG58Y?ref=ap_rdr&store_ref=ap_rdr&isDramIntegrated=true&shoppingPortalEnabled=true

One of the true “mystery men” of the 47th Pennsylvania, Joseph Clewell, Jr. was also one of the many 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers who never made it home from the war. Unlike so many of his comrades, however, he did not die on a field of battle, surrounded by his brothers in blue jackets. He withered away, most likely bereft of any companionship from other Union Army soldiers because he fell ill and died behind enemy lines—at a Confederate Army hospital in the Western Theater of the American Civil War. Learn more about him by reading our latest soldier's profile: https://47thpennsylvaniavolunteers.com/company-g/roster-company-g-47th-pennsylvania-volunteers/private-joseph-clewell-jr-from-prisoner-of-war-to-confederate-hospital-casualty/ Image: Excerpt from the U.S. Army's June 1864 death ledger entry for Private Joseph Clewell, Company G, 47th Pennsylvania Volunteers (see bottom of image). #americancivilwar #prisonersofwar #pow #civilwarmedicine #pennsylvanian #pennsylvaniahistory #louisianahistory #confederatearmy #medicine #shreveport #louisiana #unionarmy #usarmyhistory #apush #apushistory #americanhistory #america250 #infantry
