Portree hallis (1940) Karin Luts on Eesti 20. sajandi kunstiajaloos tuntud oma eripärase ja tundliku käekirja poolest. 1922. aastal astus ta õppima Tartu kunstikooli Pallas, mille lõpetas praktilise maalikunsti erialal 1928. aastal hindega „hea“. Lutsu käitumist Pallases iseloomustas isepäine hoiak, millega kaasnes kriitika kõige suhtes, mis parajasti tema idealistlike vaadetega ei sobinud. Luts maalis palju iseennast. Kui üldjuhul kohtame tema teostes androgüünse välimusega kunstnikku, kel on poisipea ning maskuliinne riietus, siis „Portree hallis“ (1940) on pigem erandlik: kunstnik on kujutanud end hallikas-lillas kleidis ja punases kübaras istuva n-ö naiseliku naise rollis. Lutsu muidu (maskuliinsetele) riietumistavadele ja käitumisviisile olla osaks saanud sealhulgas mitmed tema õpetajate narritavad märkused, nagu „geniaalne eit“ või „carson“. Karin Luts. In 1922, she started studying in the Pallas Art School in Tartu, which she graduated from with a degree in practical painting in 1928, with an evaluation of “good”. Her behaviour in Pallas was characterised by a stubborn attitude, accompanied by criticism of everything that did not match her idealistic views at the time. Luts painted a lot of self-portraits. While these portraits generally depict an artist with an androgynous appearance, a short haircut and masculine clothes, Portrait in Grey (1940) is rather exceptional: the artist depicted herself in the role of a “feminine” woman, sitting and wearing a greyish-purple dress and a red hat. This is exemplified by the etching Plough, where the theme of technologically advanced agriculture, favoured by the authorities, has taken on the form of a bizarre sporting competition: the results are measured with a stopwatch, harvesting is going on simultaneously with ploughing, and the harvested crops are miraculously transformed into bread. The collage Tractors depicts agricultural work in an almost dystopian context. Sarjast „Makrorajoon“ (2013) Arhitektide Ott Kadariku ja Mihkel Tüüri „August Lasnamäel“ ja „Talipüük Lasnamäel“ tõid Eesti kaasaegsesse kunsti uudse visiooni kogukonnaaiast. Suurlinnades 20. sajandi lõpus uuesti levima hakanud kogukonnaaianduse idee maandus nende fotolavastustes Lasnamäe linnaosa tühermaal. Fotod on osa 13. Veneetsia arhitektuuribiennaali Eesti ekspositsiooni võistlusprojektist „Makrorajoon“, millega Kadarik ja Tüür suunasid keskustelu ühiskondlikest probleemidest vaevatud Lasnamäe üle uutele radadele. Esitledes kujuteldavat Lasnamäe kvartalit, mille maastik on muudetud tootvaks ja lokaalselt toimivaks makroasumiks, tõstatasid fotod ühtlasi küsimusi Eesti ja teiste Ida-Euroopa linnade tuleviku ning olemasoleva linnakeskkonna kasutusviiside avardamise kohta. From the series “Macrorayon” (2013) These works by the architects Ott Kadarik and Mihkel Tüür are inspired by community gardening, which has regained popularity in cities worldwide since the end of the 20th century. The series competed for entry in the Estonian exhibition at the International Architecture Biennale in Venice, and contributed to the ongoing debate about the deprived Lasnamäe district in Tallinn: a residential area of socialist housing blocks divided into “microrayons” in the Soviet period. McFarlane’s death further radicalized the resistance, inciting additional violent clashes with the Government, which ultimately quelled the Whiskey Rebellion in the fall of 1794. Nädala teos: Oskar Hoffmann. Sigala. Mõnus puhkus Selle maali lõi Oskar Hoffmann – tuntud baltisaksa pagari perekonnast pärit kunstnik, kes elas Peterburis – revolutsioonilisel 1905. aastal. Huvitav, et kunstnik, kes sai tuntuks oma talupojaaineliste maalidega, tundis niivõrd pöördelisel hetkel huvi loomariigi vastu. Miks valis ta just rahuliku puhkuse motiivi, ehkki maailm ümberringi põles? Kas maal on tegelikult poliitiline allegooria – ja keda on sel juhul kujutatud seana? Saaks viidata samal aastal soomuslaeval Potjomkin toimunud kuulsale mässule, mis olevat saanud alguse just madruste protestist mädanema läinud sealiha vastu – seda stseeni kujutab ka Eisensteini legendaarne film. Ent maalis võib näha ka lihtsalt sigala kujutist. Balti kunstis ei ole just palju loomakasvatusteemalisi maale. Pigsty. Comfortable Rest This is a painting by the Baltic German artist Oskar Hoffmann, who lived in St. Petersburg, in 1905, the year of the Russian Revolution. The artist, who was known for his paintings depicting peasants, turned to the subject of animals at this landmark moment in history. Why did he choose to paint such a tranquil moment of rest, even though the world around him was exploding in revolt? Is the painting in fact a political allegory and, if so, who do the pigs represent? Might we associate this with the famous mutiny on the battleship Potemkin, which took place in the same year and allegedly began with sailors protesting at having to eat rotten pork (a scene depicted in Sergei Eisenstein’s celebrated film)? Yet we may also take the painting at face value, as a picture of a pigsty. In Baltic German art, there are not many representations of animal husbandry. Sageli tekib kiusatus näha neis kümneid sümboolseid tähendusi, kuid Leis rõhutas alati, et teda huvitab pilt kui visuaalne tervik: ükski kujutamisobjekt ei ole tähtsam või parem kui teine, kunstis on need kõik võrdsed. Winter Various symbols and repeated motifs are present in the works of Malle Leis: plants and flowers, hands and watches, rainbows and horses. It is often tempting to read dozens of symbolic meanings into them, although Leis always emphasised that she was interested in the image as a visual whole: no depicted object was more important than any other; in her art, they are all equal. In many of her paintings, Malle Leis used the “picture-in-a-picture” technique, hiding smaller narratives in a larger composition. Or she used figures which at first go unnoticed, but which juxtapose the perspective and the spatial sensibility of the image. A tiny rider with a dog in Winter is an example of these hidden figures that take over the whole pictorial surface. Happy City of the Kingdom of Flowers Born in 1954 in Foglianise, near Benevento, Nicola De Maria has been based in Turin since his youth. He initially enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine and pursued a specialisation in neurology, a profession he has never practised, as his true passion lay in art. After a brief foray into photography, in 1975 he embarked on a prolific journey of creating drawings in notebooks, first in pencil and then in pastel, oil and watercolour. These early successes led him to paint directly on walls and create his first small oil canvases. His method of creation is similar to that of poetry: “One who writes a poem, fingers dirty with paint”, he once defined himself. Jungle (West Berlin Cycle I) In 1973 Maija Tabaka met Valdis Āboliņš (1939–1984), a Latvian artist living in West Berlin who became acquainted with the artistic life of Soviet Latvia and organised the exhibition “20 Realists from Soviet Latvia” in Düsseldorf in the same year. With his support, in 1977 Tabaka received a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship as the first artist from the Soviet Union to reside for a year at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in West Berlin. Jungle is the first painting from Tabaka’s West Berlin cycle, and was inspired by a visit to the legendary nightclub of the same name and its atmosphere, which was shaped, among other things, by the consumption of various prohibited substances. The second work of the cycle, What is your name? Kabaree Eduard Wiiralt sündis 1898. aastal Peterburi kubermangus Robidetsi mõisa toatüdruku Sophie-Elisabeth Asuri ja mõisateenistuja Anton Wiralti pojana. 1919 astus Wiiralt äsja avatud Pallase kunstikooli Tartus, kust suundus 1922. a kevadel Dresdeni stažeerima. 1925. aastal sai ta stipendiumi Pariisi sõiduks, kuhu jõudis sama aasta sügisel ning jäi sinna elama. „Kabaree“ kandis esialgu pealkirja „Elu tants”. See on täis pillavat ja küllastavat maailmalõpueelset nautlemist, mille keskmes on meelad tantsud. Teos kuulub „Põrgu“ ja „Jutlustaja“ kõrval Wiiralti esimese Prantsusmaa-perioodi tippteoste hulka. Kõiki neid iseloomustab kogu teose pinna tihe läbitöötatus ja inimhulkade kujutamine hüpnotiseerivalt ja detailselt. Salongikultuuri ja suurlinnaelu satiiris „Kabaree“ põimuvad metafüüsiline ja realistlik hoogsaks figuuride mereks. Cabaret Eduard Wiiralt was born in 1898 in the St Petersburg Governorate, the son of the chambermaid Sophie-Elisabeth Asur and the worker Anton Wiiralt. In 1919, Wiiralt started studying at the newly opened Pallas Art School in Tartu, and in 1922 he went to the Dresden to supplement his skills. In spring 1925, he received a grant to visit Paris, arriving in the city in autumn and settling there. “Cabaret” was initially called “The Dance of Life”. It is full of lavish and opulent pre-apocalyptic hedonism focussing on sensual dancing. Besides “Hell” and “Preacher”, this is one of the highlights of Wiiralt’s first period in France. All are characterized by densely covered surfaces and the way crowds are depicted, hypnotically and in detail. “Cabaret” offers a satire of the salon culture and metropolitan life, the metaphysical and realistic intertwine in a lively sea of figures. Nädala teos: Anna von Wahl. Lapsed lumememmega Anna von Wahl oli baltisaksa päritolu maalikunstnik, joonistaja ja illustraator. Von Wahl sündis 1861. aastal Peterburis, elas hiljem Berliinis ning töötas ajutiselt ka Tartus. Anna von Wahl lõi figuratiivseid kompositsioone, portreid, interjööri- ja maastikumaale, akvarelle ja joonistusi, aga ka illustratsioone lasteraamatutele ja ajakirjadele, plakateid ja eksliibriseid. Von Wahli loomingut hinnati tema eluajal kõrgelt, kuid osasid tema illustratsioone peetakse tänapäeval ka üsna „magusateks“. Siinsel akvarellil näeme esiplaanil tagurpidi pööratud pingist valmistatud „kelgul“ istuvat poissi ja teda vedavat tütarlast. Nende taga on kujutatud allegoorilist lumemeest. Teos oli väljas ka Kumu näitusel „Eneseloomine. Emantsipeeruv naine Eesti ja Soome kunstis“ (2019/2020). 🌍 Weekly pic(k): Anna von Wahl. Children with a Snowman Anna von Wahl was a Baltic-German artist who excelled in painting, drawing and illustrating. Von Wahl was born in 1861 in St. Petersburg, later lived in Berlin and worked temporarily in Tartu. Anna von Wahl created figural compositions, portraits, paintings of interiors, landscapes, watercolours and drawings; she also illustrated children’s books and magazines, and designed posters and bookplates. Von Wahl’s oeuvre was highly appreciated in her lifetime, but some of her illustrations are regarded as “sugary” nowadays. In the foreground of this particular watercolour, we can see a boy sitting on a “sledge” made of an upturned bench and a girl pulling him. An allegorical snowman has been depicted behind them.
