Unfortunately, habitat degradation and the illegal pet trade pose significant threats to its survival. 🐢 It’s World Turtle Day, and it’s time to shell-ebrate! 🐢 Here at the Park we are home to the long-necked turtle (Chelondina oblonga) or ‘yakkan’, its Noongar name. The long-necked turtle loves slow moving water, making Horse Swamp and the surrounding wetlands ideal turtle habitat – in fact, they are often spotted around the Mussel Pool area as they waddle between water bodies. It’s important to keep an eye out for turtles when driving or riding on any roads near waterways. Car strikes and predation by introduced foxes are some one of their biggest threats. Their other biggest threat is from something much bigger – climate change. Drying lakes from low rainfall and hotter summers increases the risk that they’ll come face-to-face with these twin threats. Unfortunately, these sweet reptiles are listed as near threatened, making it all the more important to keep our eyes peeled to ensure they can travel safely, when on the move! The term biodiversity is used to describe the enormous variety of life on earth, including plants, bacteria, animals, and humans. All of the animals below are just a microscopic piece of the wide variety of biodiversity in the ecosystem that VETPAW helps protect across South Africa. All organisms within an ecosystem are interconnected which is why maintaining biodiversity is so important. For example, the seeds from fruits trees and plants on the reserve feed the vervet monkeys. When vervet monkeys digest the fruit, their feces deposit the seeds onto the ground, which then not only returns nutrients to the soil, but also plants the seeds to grow new plants or trees that also feed other species, such as the beloved savanna elephant. Scientists believe there are 8.7 million species on earth, yet only 2.13 million have been identified according to Our World In Data. While Earth’s biodiversity is so rich, many species are being threatened with extinction due to human consumption and other activities that disturb and even destroy ecosystems. Pollution, climate change, and population growth are all threats to biodiversity. It’s believed by some scientists that within the next century, half of all species on earth will be wiped out. This is why conservation efforts are so important. We here at VETPAW are not only protecting the charismatic African wildlife we all love, but also every organism that lives across Africa. 🐛Caterpillars are the larval stage of the Lepidoptera order that includes butterflies, moths and beetles, among others. They typically eat leaves, with few exceptions who feed on eggs or larvae of other insects or have definite diets. Caterpillars of ants, bees and wasps can look like caterpillars of Lepidoptera. On that stage all they do is eat and can grow many fold their size. Some are considered agricultural pests; others are used to produce silk or as food for animals and humans and even as pest control. They are also eaten by other animals as birds and wasps once they are rich in protein. To defend themselves some caterpillars mimic poisonous animals, as snakes for example, others mimic the plant they are on, and a few are indeed poisonous. Others still, associate with ants to obtain food or still aggregate as a group to appear larger and to protect one another. I just traveled to Chicago to pick up Christian, Sally, and Hugo from O'Hare and stayed overnight with my childhood friend Mary in Park Ridge, where I grew up. But wow, talk about timing! The 17-year cicadas are emerging, and it was like something out of a horror movie. There were thousands on the tree outside Mary’s house. I stood by the tree for just five minutes to take photos and video, and the next thing I knew, at least six of them were crawling up my leg! It was an unforgettable experience. You’re looking at one of the smallest snake species in North America: the Eastern Worm Snake! 🪱 SO COOL. 😩 This was a lifer species for me, but Elyssa has seen them before. Still, after a night of herping, we were both totally stoked about the opportunity to observe one up close and in the wild! 🪱 Appropriately named the Eastern Worm Snake (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴), this scaly friend resembles a giant earthworm and is, in fact, a snake. They typically have a chestnut or brown-colored back (dorsum) with a pinkish belly (venter). 🍽️ This snake, despite its name, is no friend to earthworms, as its diet predominantly consists of worms. When these aren’t available, they will gladly choose spiders, slugs, and caterpillars as prey. 🙈 Eastern Worm Snakes are typically elusive and not usually found during the day because they spend their time in hollowed-out logs, beneath stones, or in brush piles! 🌎 They can be found in forest-covered areas across Virginia and the Carolinas, usually up to 1,300m elevation!
