I personally struggle with the imposter syndrome. My thoughts go like this: "There are so many other professionals who understand neurodiversity. What makes me an expert?" So, whenever I hear other professionals making brilliant observations and giving excellent guidance, it reinforces my belief that I’m not truly an expert. Then there's my other belief that I know what I’ve lived and learned personally and professionally, and I know there aren’t many other professionals who know neurodiversity like me. I know that I've helped literally thousands of clients. I know I can help people transform their lives! Most of the time I clearly recognize my expertise and I am so glad that there are other providers who also understand neurodiversity. I even started a Neurodiversity Provider Network so we can all collaborate and be resources for each other.

#longblack and #raspberrycake in @maxbrenneraus in @highpointofficial!!! The staff here are friendly and they treated me with respect. I think I prefer this Max Brenner over the one in the city. The #cake was really nice. It was moist and freshly made and I wasn't told off for having no table manners and big mouthfuls. As #autistics we don't have a lot of good table manners at times. Sometimes we just want to finish the food because we are so hungry!!!! As the days go by I slowly unmasking myself. When I signed for the @hiddendisabilities_anz program was the day that I accepted that I was not normal and it's ok!!!! As @elliemidds and others say it is unhealthy to mask!!! Society needs to learn our language and be more inclusive of us autistics. This idea made me cackle. Im still reading Let this Radicalize you by Kelly Hayes & Mariame Kaba and was struct with the idea that I would love a book on activism by Autistic people. Which made me think of this post! If you do not know Autistic people are often known for their strong sense of justice. (this can back fire if being taught the wrong messaging). Most autistic people I speak with really struggle with inequality and are way more likely to break social norms and speak up. Not recognizing or attaching personal value to social expectations. Plus some of us have solid pattern recognition. Which means we see human patterns play out and can assume where this is going. We can see that the murder of thousands can occur with no world intervention. That there is nothing stopping that pattern from impacting ANYONE. So even if we turn away because "it's not happening to me". Think again. We are way closer social ruin and oppression then we are to power. As we can see with college students being abused on campuses around the world, how quickly we can fall out of so called "favor". #autism #autistics #socaljustice #Morality #equality #mentalhealth #watermelon #adhd #neurodivergent #community #sustainability #communalcare #fatjoy #vulnerable #may #trauma #patterns #actuallyautistic #autisticaf

Running an event for #Autistics? Thinking of becoming an #advocate? Simply wanting to be more #inclusive? This is the book you need. Book review of "Creating Safe Spaces for Autistic People: A Guide for Building your Affirming Organisation or Group" by @autisticallyscott and @laura.nd.nurse.consulting ! 🌈💗 I feel incredibly validated reading this. I have always thought I was too demanding when going to events. I now know a lot of this should have been my norm and should continue to be so. I have always felt guilty for not liking games and activities. This makes me feel so much more at ease and comforted knowing I can say no! Not forcing activities on us is huge. Group games make me panic. Bathroom situation is key to know whether or not I'll attend something. If no known bathrooms are nearby or bathroom breaks, I won't attend. The depth of accessibility required and gender inclusiveness regarding this topic is amazing. Not requiring cameras or microphones is important during virtual events. Allowing text instead is necessary. I will avoid a lot of events that require your camera to be on. This also makes it more accessible to those with kids or caregivers in the background. I learned a lot even though I myself am Autistic. I learned that all this time I haven't been "too much". Everyone else just hasn't properly accommodated me and many others. It also, as an advocate myself, was confirming that I have been using the correct language. The language used by a page, organization, business, etc will tell you most of what you need to know about them and how up to date they are on their information. Using outdated language is a red flag. There are many references and new people quoted in the book I can't wait to follow! 💖💖💖 The large text, bold colors (although there is color reduced version) and simple format made it very easy to read. I read the entire book in under an hour without rushing. I highly recommend this even if you aren't running events or pages. This information is important for everyone to know. It's eye opening and validating to those like myself.

#AutisticBurnout has become an unfortunate norm for #Autistics any combination of stressors combined with a lack of #Support or #Accomodations can lead to months or years of burnout. I've dealt with (and am still recovering from Autistic Burnout). It can be difficult to talk about, but I'm choosing to share my story to raise #Awareness and support others who may be experiencing something similar. I think it's important to overcome #Shame so we can end #Stigma. I'll admit there have been times when I'm so depressed I can't get out of bed and take care of myself. I've had meltdowns so exhausting all I can do is sleep for hours on end afterwards. The beauty is, I just went because the paediatrician really felt it was adhd AND autism due to her specific play, her lining up of everything - toys, stars on her wall etc, poor executive functioning, and the slow processing speed, not really wanting to be amongst other children, and speech errors. Whether she is or not, doesn’t change anything for us (yet.) We still continue working through the learning disabilities. Still continue loving. Still continue dealing with the craziness that is ADHD. And still have a moving rib to sort out. But it WAS a waste of money because her REASONS were faulty. My girl is not a blank sponge. She doesn’t line things up everywhere she is because she’s thinking, “I don’t know what to do with my hands…What does my BROTHER usually do?” Seriously. She’s not stupid. She’s not a thoughtless follower. #autistics #autism #adultautistic #autism

Happy Sunday Folks! In celebration of April as Autism Acceptance Month, this month’s series of my column about parenting a child on the autisms spectrum — Hear from other local autism parents, caregivers and individuals on the autism spectrum. In this week’s installation, my daughter’s dad shares a touching narrative about traveling internationally with our daughter, Soanirina. He shares traveling tips, funny narratives and more. See excerpt below and link in IG bio to read full article. (3-minute) read. Traveling With My Daughter with Autism by Rado Rafiringa As a child growing up in Madagascar, my parents gifted us quite the life. They provided love, nurture, food, shelter, security, discipline—yet on many occasions, left my sisters and me home alone, and we had fun. We had no babysitter and managed ourselves. After school, we would go unsupervised to play with friends in the neighborhood, swim at the beach and roam the coastline, while mom corrected essays and dad hung out with the fellas after work. All was well, so long we maintained decent grades and came home in one piece and on time for dinner. By current NYS law, my parents would arguably be regular CPS cases. In retrospect, I had a risky, carefree, eventful and happy childhood…Once a parent, I wanted to impart some of my childhood experience to my daughter, Soanirina, (“Soa”) and also share this big world with her… (See link in IG bio to read full article. 3-minute read). Grandparenting Autistics is a topic I enjoy speaking and writing about. So many grandparents (my baby boomer buddies) are confused and unprepared to give assistance to family members. Grandparents want to be involved, want to help, want to offer support and respite for their grandchildren, yet have little to no experience with neurodiversity. In this article of the June @autismparentingmagazine, I offer some basic understanding. This is a journey. We need to continue to educate all. I have several workbooks on my website for grandparents. 👏 Youth #MentalHealth is gaining the attention it deserves with initiatives like Gov. Kathy Hochul's recent $1 billion investment plan in New York. Even Hollywood is chiming in, with the upcoming release of Inside Out 2, promising to continue vital conversations about mental health through the lens of #adolescence. 🎬 🧩 While these conversations are crucial, they often overlook a significant sub-population: #neurodivergent teens, particularly those with intellectual and developmental disabilities ( #IDD). 📉 #Autistics are disproportionately affected by mental health issues, yet our current systems are not designed to address the unique intersection of #neurodiversity and mental health. From inaccessible services to fragmented care, the gaps are glaring and, for many, life-threatening. 💡 But there is hope. Initiatives like the federal government's call for public comments to the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC) signal a step in the right direction. At a recent Mental Health Townhall, Commissioner Ann Marie Sullivan expressed openness to adapting existing resources for neurodivergent populations, highlighting a growing recognition of the need for change. 🌱 🛣️ However, the road ahead is long, and the time to act is now. Neurodiverse couples sometimes struggle with communicating love and care even more than other couples. Even if your partner's love language doesn't make sense to you, and even if it seems unnatural, learn to speak it at least a little. (kinda like learning a little bit of French when you visit Paris). Words of Affirmation - put a note on your calendar to say "I love you," "I appreciate you," or "I'm glad you're part of my life." Acts of Service - Do something that will make your partner's day a little easier (it doesn't have to be big), and don't refer to it as "helping." Gifts - Grab your partner's favorite drink from Starbucks on the way home from Home Depot (if you don't know your partner's favorite treat, FIND OUT!) Quality Time - Go on a walk with your partner or binge a show together (ask your partner what she/he would like to watch). Go on a drive and take turns listening to your favorite songs. Physical Touch - Give your partner a massage (only if your partner likes this). It can just be a foot rub or even a hand massage. Run your fingers through your partner's hair. Give your partner a hug - it may be a little uncomfortable for you, but it will mean the world to a partner whose love language is physical touch.

Posted @withregram • @neuroclastic Yesterday, we had a graphic with a silhouette made of the phrases autistic people hear all the time— from therapists, teachers, parents, friends, employers, and partners— that push autistic people into a life of #masking and living inauthentically. Today, we are posting what phrases and words are more conducive to a life lived with authenticity and emotional resilience. Yes, there will always be people who will reject what is different, who believe children should be seen and not heard, who think that “normal” means superior— and that is why we will always have traumatized people trying to push the status quo into a more accepting and inclusive way of existing. Accommodating for #autistics, #ADHDers, and all marginalized groups makes the world a safer, healthier, more vibrant place for ALL people. All people would benefit from an existence that is more concerned with what works and what is True over what is “popular” or “normal.” This is what acceptance looks like. Special thanks to the talented @DissentByDesign for this beautiful art. Pinned response has an image description with the phrases in the image. #ActuallyAutistic #ActuallyADHD #ADHD #ABAtherapy #ABA #Autism #Compliance #AutisticMasking #CodeSwitching #AutismAwareness #AutismAcceptance #AutisticAcceptance #AutismAwareness #Autism #SuicidePrevention #SLPsofInstagram #Education #SEND #SPED #ieps #accommodations #PeakWeaver

The first time I remember understanding the implications of work came in grade school. As an undiagnosed Autistic with major sensory sensitivities, school was my least favorite place in the world. On one particularly anxiety-filled morning, when I was refusing to get ready for school, my frustrated, single mother decided honesty was the best policy, and she explained to me very succinctly how the world of work, well, works. “Right now, school is your job and one day a job will be your job. No matter what, not all of your time will belong to you. You don’t have to like it; you just have to do it.” And just like that, what it meant to work became crystal clear, and overwhelmingly depressing, at the same time. For #Autistics like me, "just having to do it" makes things much harder. And work often becomes more like a complex maze of performing for others while doing my best to keep my own needs to a minimum, because at most jobs the expectation is that you leave your humanness at the door. The world of work is full of unwritten social rules and networking politics that are nothing but barriers for Autistics, with many of us suffering from workplace and employment trauma as a result, myself very much included. The saddest part? It rarely has anything to do with the work itself, but rather the unconscious bias we face simply by being different. As an openly #AutisticProfessional, there could not be a greater challenge. My concerns about having my needs met have to be just as important for me as the job itself. It is nearly impossible for me to sustain employment otherwise. I believe a shift in how we think about employment is well overdue. Workplace culture needs a major overhaul. We need to build our humanness back into the way that we work. And without cultivation of difference, and a willingness to adapt, we won't stand a chance to succeed at making employment truly equitable and inclusive. ID: image reads part of a quote from the text above, with a darkened picture of mine in the background where you can see part of my face. I am not smiling and I am wearing glasses, a black t-shirt, short green hair, and my hand is up to my chin.

It pains me to write this but people do stare at those that do something differently or look different. I've had people stare at me before. Unfortunately we are forced to hide our #disability A message to those #autistics that wear #tracksuits like @kristian.barker and others!!!!! No offense but many high-end places will not accept customers wearing tracksuits #autistic or not!!!! Please wear #jeans everywhere or you would be kicked out. I certainly would be uncomfortable if I see someone wearing trackpants and home clothes to a high end place like in @crownmelbourne!!!! I put up with Kristian wearing them in cafe baci but will no longer in Crown. In fact I will not invite him to anywhere in Crown or high end!!!! In fact I would always do my research before inviting him And please don't visit Dan's diner in Fed Square unless you wear jeans as it looks like it's a high end place Food bloggers what do you think about people wearing trackpants to a high end place? Please make a story or a post about it!!!! #foodbloggers #HiddenDisabilitiesAwareness #pleasewearjeans #thisautisticcanwearjeans #hiddendisabilities #issue #crowncasino
