One year ago this week I found a moment of solace in my backyard. I think the trees called to me that day, so I looked up to see what they might say. I felt their healing vibrational energy, but this impromptu photo froze a slice in time that today I am in awe of🙏🌻 Sometimes in moments of anxiety or grief seeking nature will bring peace to my spirit. But it's in those moments that taking that first step toward what is calling YOU the most, is the hardest step of all. Keep taking those steps, and remember you are never alone! #solace #treetherapy  #vibrationalenergy #backyardnature #meditation #healing #moonmother #rebel.therapist #essentionalwellbeings #rootsandwingsyogawellness

These two cuties have been "playing hide-and-seek" in our backyard all day. First, the baby settles down in a cozy, hidden spot while the mom wanders away. Later, the mom returns and the babe is missing. It feels like they're using us as home base, but It's getting dark. I hope they can reconnect soon. #kidsoutdoors #kidsandnaturethebestcombination #kidsandanimals #nonfictionkidlit #nonfictionpb #backyardnature #homeschoolingoutside #aasl

Spider appreciation post. Spiders are probably some of the first insects I notice in my yard as we slowly emerge from winter. When the snow is melted, but everything is still brown and nothing is growing yet, I'll see quick little black spiders moving among the leaf litter (not the spiders pictured here). Then, when plants finally start to come up out of the ground, I start to notice a lot of these little spiders in the photos. Not sure exactly the species, but they seem to be everywhere. I even saw a few hanging out on the stems where the ceratina bees were nesting, no doubt looking for a meal. Once it's summer, in the cool mornings I can see all the funnel webs of spiders all over my backyard, innumerable. I'll also come across the standard webs we all think of when we think of spider webs. Sometimes the webs will be suspended high up off the ground between the power lines to my home. A weird thing that also happens very frequently is I'll find the little gray jumping spiders just on the inside of my doors. I'm not quite sure how or why they always end up on the inside of my doors, but then I usually have to try to convince them to trust me and let me take them back outside 😁 not always easy. Anyway, these photos were taken within the last day or so. The first and last photo were the same spider on top of a dandelion head (maybe a thrill-seeker waiting for a stiff breeze 😁) and the other was a spider having an old friend over for dinner. #spiders #spiderphotography #backyardnature #naturelovers #insectsofig #inthegarden #bugs #insectphotography #spood #spooder #insecto

Recent reptile sightings in the yard: spotted this rat snake (Pantherophis alleghaniensis) in the yard today and as I was following it also came across this lovely eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina). We’ve also had tons of skinks (Plestiodon sp.) and the occasional garter snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) hanging out. I’m hoping the snakes will help keep the vole population in check this year so my newly planted natives plants don’t take as much damage as last year. #reptiles #nativewildlife #boxturtle #snake #lizard #skink #gartersnake #ratsnake #backyardwildlife #backyardnature #suburbanwildlife #marylandnature #marylandreptiles #coexistwithnature #herpetology

A second chipmunk! 🐿️ Longer tail, darker coat that yesterday's; skittish at first, which is what made me suspect something was up. Yesterday's has a nest somewhere beyond my backyard, this one is apparently resident. Also yesterday's ran across my foot at one point, so definitely unafraid. . #backyardnature #urbanwildlife #chipmunk #канадскавеверица

The black and white warbler prefers to live in various forests in mature trees. Females build their nests on the ground. They hop around on trees foraging for insects. This behavior more closely aligns with a nuthatch than a warbler. They are one of the earliest spring migrators. #birds #backyardbirds #birdphotography #birdphoto #birdphotos #backyardnature #birdnerd #ontariobirds #greybruce #birdwatching #backyard_birdhouse #featheredfriends #bestbirdshots #birdfeeding #birds_watchers_daily #amazingbirds #dailybirdshow #birdshots #birdpics #birdsofontario #birdsofcanada #wildbirds #backyard #featheredfriends #blackandwhitewarbler #springmigration

Update: They are up to 5 eggs. Also, wanted anyone concerned to know that this pot is right outside a large window in the house, so we can actually see the activity from inside. I don't take a photo without making sure the nest is currently unattended. Once she begins incubating them, she will only leave the nest to eat for a brief time. I will gently water the plant (a $$ blue hibiscus, were not willing to let die) during those moments when possible. Incubation lasts about 3 weeks. 🐣🐥🐤 #gambelsquail #backyardnature

How can you help the bees this World Bee Day? [And every day!] Australia has around 2,000 species of native bees. These tiny insects have a big role to play in keeping our ecosystems healthy. And there are things YOU can do to help them 🐝 🌼 Plant local species that flower throughout the year. 🌼 Avoid using herbicides and pesticides. 🌼 Provide access to water (bird baths work well). 🌼 Leave some bare earth for them to nest in the ground (many native species are burrowers). Gardening with kids is the perfect chance to talk to them about bees [and other animals] that rely on our home gardens. And the folks at @greenadelaidesa have great info on attracting and supporting them. If you’re after a nature play ACTIVITY, you could try an easy bee hotel with bamboo, a skewer, and string. Simply hollow out the bamboo with the skewer, tie it with string, place it in your garden, and watch to see who moves in 💛 📷 Jason Tyndall, Nature Play SA

American redstart !! This bright little bird breeds in North America, spanning southern Canada and the eastern United States. They are migratory, wintering in Central America, the West Indies, and northern South America. As we approach the end of spring, House Martins will begin their breeding season! Did you know, a house martin nest is made up of around 1000 lumps of clay and weighs about 500? It is most often lined with white feathers brought in by the male bird. On average it takes about three weeks for a house martin to construct a nest, but they generally prefer to reuse old nests than to start a new one from scratch. They nest communally so houses with house martins usually have a number of nests. House martins mate inside their nests but they are not terribly faithful to their partners – three-quarters of nests contain chicks fathered by another male! Up to 11 house martins have been found to sleep in a single nest – both adult birds and their first and second brood of young. 🪺🪶 Facts: https://devonhousemartins.org.uk/information/house-martin-facts/ Photo: https://www.saga.co.uk/magazine/home-garden/gardening/wildlife/birds/house-martin #birdbox #birdhouse #backyardbirds #birdlovers #birdwatching #birdnest #birdsofinstagram #birding #gardenbirds #premiumbirdhouses #handcrafted #sustainable #ecofriendly #backyardnature #nestingbox #birdconservation #birdhabitat #backyardwildlife #springbirds #birdhousecollection #nestingbox #nestingboxes #nestingboxesofinstagram #peakboxes #barnowl #swift #starling

I went to one of my favorite places today for a late afternoon walk to see what all of our rain has done down at Chisolm Creek. It was really hot but lush and beautiful. The creek was as high as I have ever seen it, and one of the low water crossings was still underwater today. I saw many beautiful birds, and the local wildlife was very much enjoying the abundant water. #beautifulbirds #BirdsofTexas #backyardwildlife #backyardnature #urbanforest #iamaphotographer #aphotographerslife #alwayslookingforthenextshot #intentionalphotography #peripheralvision #sonyalpha6600 #tamron18300mmsony #localhikes #localtrails #wildlifephotography #birdsofinstagram #sonyalpha #sonyvibes #Sony #sonyphotography #chisolmtrail

Have you heard about #NoMowMay? The No Mow May project is designed to provide early-season forage — think: clovers, violets, and other low-growing flowers — for hungry pollinators emerging from winter hibernation, especially in suburban neighborhoods where floral resources are few. Studies have shown that mowing less frequently increases both the abundance and diversity of bees, butterflies, and other pollinators in backyard habitats. This month, the Harris Center will be leaving some of our lawn unmowed to support bees and other pollinators. We invite you to join us! #BackyardNature #NearbyNature #BackyardHabitat #ProtectPollinators #SuperSanctuary
