Bakelite was invented in 1907 by Leo Hendrik Baekland and was the first truly synthetic resin. It was formally called polyoxybenzylmethyleneglycolanhydride. I like Bakelite better! It is formed from a condensation reaction of phenol with formaldehyde. Other plastics such as lucite or catalin are often confused with Bakelite. A frequently used test is to use simichrome to check for a chemical reaction. Take a dab of simichrome cream and use a cloth to rub it on the object in question. If it’s Bakelite, the cloth will be yellow, any shade from light to dark. I think it’s fun love the bright colors! The darker green bangle looks nearly black until examined under bright lighting, as shown. For a large part of my 30+ years of collecting, I was a vintage bakelite purist. I only wanted old, original production designs. Early on, many of the reworked bakelite pieces I saw were copies of old bracelets trying to pass as vintage, done by makers who didn't sign their work. I didn't want any part of that, so I avoided artisan work altogether. On my annual pilgrimage to Brimfield, I saw the booths of some of the major artists, but I never gave them more than a passing glance since I thought I wasn't interested. . It wasn't until I happened upon some bracelets on ebay that it dawned on me. These newly assembled pieces used vintage bakelite, but they were different. There was artistry and skill! The designs were so unusual, there's no way these would be mistaken for vintage. Once I started looking, I found more and more artists who were proud of their work and eager to put their name on their creations. It changed my whole way of thinking as I came to really appreciate these mini works of art. . The picture is my first Ebay purchases of artisan bakelite. These were all done by Teresa. I was hooked! . I have lots of great artisan bakelite bracelets that are truly amazing, but I really regret that I didn't understand and value creative artists' work sooner in my collecting. .
