SURPRISE IDYLLWILD AURORA Taking advantage of dark skies this weekend, I headed up to Idyllwild near Mt. San Jacinto to shoot some Milky Way (will post those later). I had heard about the strong solar storm but had zero expectations of seeing any impact in the night sky. Boy was I wrong - I kept seeing a red hue on the edges of my Milky Way shots as I looked mostly south, so I turned my camera north - specifically MAGNETIC NORTH and here is what I captured. Wow, just WOW. I have NEVER seen anything like this. These are the “Northern Lights” after all and I am in Southern California! As I was shooting my mind was racing thinking about the charged ions following the strong magnetic field lines and the wonder of seeing how sometimes you can see particle physics working in real life, right in front of you. More on the physics or it all from Wikipedia: Auroras are the result of disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere caused by the solar wind. Major disturbances result from enhancements in the speed of the solar wind from coronal holes and coronal mass ejections. These disturbances alter the trajectories of charged particles in the magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere (thermosphere/exosphere). There are some places that just instill a bit of peace in your soul. This place is one of those. While sitting watching the stars dance across the sky, I catch my breath at the thought af all those that gave their lives on this land. The animals scurrying around in the dark and my friend, a large buck, who enjoys making me jump by sneaking up close then snorting. This is probably not one of the best images I have captured there but it has a bit of romance. It is perfectly imperfect. This image was captured in July of 2023. I’ve photographed this location in years past, so I knew the Milky Way would be moving over Bell Rock while we were there. What I didn't know was the ground would be covered with a plethora of white flowers whose blossoms were open. It reminded me of the scene in the Wizard of Oz, when they came upon the poppy field. The moon hadn't set, so it illuminated part of Bell Rock and the ground. This was one of those magical, amazing, off the chart, Sedona moments that happen every now and again! Joshua Tree Milky Way This was my second location when I was in Joshua Tree National Park. My first location was convenient to where my campsite was and had an awesome rock feature but a resident coyote had a different idea with that plan. The Milky Way core aligned perfectly with this taller than average Joshua Tree as most were a lot smaller. You could see the giant light dome of light pollution from Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley over the mountains. I shot this a couple of weeks ago. There was a bonfire party to the left. About 20 minutes later the sheriff arrived and cars scattered.😳 At first I was annoyed by The sheriffs blue and red lights plus the headlights of everyone leaving! Then I saw the back of my camera... Turned out pretty well I think! 🤣
Hi everyone! This is @francomecon1 with my second picture on today's takeover. This is one of the most stunning Deep Space Objects we have in the skies of the Southern Hemisphere, the Carina Nebula. It is a complex region with emission and dark nebulae and it also contains several open clusters. This image was taken with the Sony a6300 camera mounted on a Skywatcher 150/750 reflector telescope, at the Lanin National Park in Patagonia, a magical place with one of the darkest skies I've ever seen.
