What’s your favorite animal themed game? 🦊🐻🐻❄️🐨🐍 Life of the Amazonia by @badcometgames is a bag building, animal themed game where you create the best jungle! In the game, you will draw 5 tokens from your bag that will provide you with leaf, water, fruit, or gold resources, which each token varying in value. You’ll then use these resources to buy new tokens, place terrain tiles, animals, trees, aquatic flowers, obtain nature cards, as well as a few other actions If you bought “life”, you’ll place them on the terrain tiles in front of you, and they’ll grant you points depending on how they are placed and how they interact with their environment. Once the players have used up all the meeples on 5 out of 8 animals, you’ll score for each animal as well as how far along the waterfall tracks you’ve gone. There are also Scenery cards that you can purchase that will grant end-game scoring. However, these can feel a little lucky as one that is perfect for you may be revealed near the end of the game We appreciated how the waterfall tracks give bonuses and how the points grow exponentially the higher up you go, making it attractive to focus on placing 1 of the 3 components to gain more points. Additionally, similar to Cascadia, there are multiple sets of the base animals, changing up the scoring rules and keeping things fresh A common criticism about this game is it’s downtime and how solitaire it feels. However, we felt that the downtime gave us time to plan out our next turn (barring disruptions when another player takes what we want) and the solitaire feeling ends when you’re deciding which animals to deplete and which cards to grab We really love Life of the Amazonia for its engaging bag building gameplay as well as its lovely nature theme. First in Flight First in Flight is set in the pioneering era of aviation, when the dream of flying was just beginning to take shape. Players assume the roles of renowned aviators of the time, competing to achieve the highest fame. Over the course of four years (rounds), the game features deck-building with a generous dose of press-your-luck mechanics. With the time track as a governance element, players take turns moving their aviators from one action space to another, aiming to improve their decks (which determine flight distance), acquire new technologies to enhance their flying efficiency, gain friends with unique abilities, and earn money. The game ends when the first player moves their Flight Record Tracker beyond 36 in a single flight action without crashing on the score track. The player who achieves the longest sustained flight at the end wins the game. For me, the most fun comes from performing a flight action. The tension of flipping over the cards in your Flight deck is exhilarating. It becomes especially intense when you’re just one or two cards away from surpassing your previous record but have already revealed some flaws. In those moments, everything hinges on a few random card flips, and you’ll be praying to any deities listening that you don’t crash. First in Flight achieves a balance that is equally entertaining, invigorating, and educational game as only @gotgeniusgames is capable of. Ich habe vorgestern Abend zum ersten Mal House of Fado über Tabletopia gespielt. Die Regeln waren in 20 Minuten erklärt und wir haben zu dritt 90 Minuten gespielt. In dem Spiel betreibt man ein Fado-Restaurant in Lissabon und versucht den meisten Ruhm zu erringen. Man wirbt Musiker an, holt Gäste von der Straße und versucht dadurch den Ruhm seiner Musiker und seinem Fado-Restaurant zu steigern. Das Ganze ist ein Rennen um das Erlangen von Sternen, die man dafür erhält, dass man als erster das Ende der Ruhmesleiste mit seinem Restaurant erreicht, 4 Fado-Stücke komponiert oder einen seiner angestellten Musiker als erstes zum höchsten Ruhm in seiner Kategorie führt (portugiesische Gitarre, Gesang oder klassische Gitarre). Man muss dazu Musiker anwerben, die teurer werden, je mehr Ruhm sie haben. Man wirbt auf der Straße um Gäste für sein Restaurant und holt Kritiker in sein Restaurant, die man dafür anfangs sogar bezahlen muss, die jedoch den Ruhm des eigenen Etablissements erhöhen. Man promotet seine Musiker und schreibt neue Fado-Stücke, Man erkennt bei dem Spiel in einigen Mechaniken eindeutig seine Verwandtschaft zu The Gallerist von Vital Lacerda, der auch House of Fado mitentwickelt hat, zusammen mit Joao Quintela Martins. Mir gefällt das Thema des Spiels sehr gut, da ich sowohl Lissabon als auch Fado sehr mag. Auch das Artwork gefällt mir. Das ist aber sicher nicht jedermanns Sache. Für mich ist es ein schönes Kennerspiel, bei dem mich vor allem das Thema abholt. Dazu einen schönen Portwein und eine Fado-CD auflegen. Allerdings ist es auch ein Rennspiel. Es endet, wenn es einer schafft. den 3 Stern zu erringen und das kann schneller passieren als man denkt. Das Problem für Leute, die sich nur durch den Namen Lacerda zum Kauf des Spieles verleiten lassen ist, dass ihre Erwartungen wahrscheilich enttäusch werden, da House of Fado halt kein extrem verzahntes Experten-Euro ist sondern ein Eurospiel auf Kenner-Niveau, dass sich schnell und flüssig runterspielen läßt und bei dem man nicht 4-5 Halbzüge voraus denken muss. 1-2 reicht hier völlig. Für alle, die das durch Bot Factory und Mercado de Lisboa schon kennen sollte das kein Problem sein.
English in the comments below Tabannusi - Die Erbauer von Ur ist für mich eines der besten Spiele von Daniele Tascini. Ich liebe den Mechanismus mit den Würfeln und dem Auslösen der Wertungen. Von der Komplexität her liegt das Spiel zwischen Kenner- und Expertenspiel. Man errichtet Gebäude in einem von 3 Stadtbezirken, dem Hafen und der Zikkurat. Das Spiel geht über 5 Runden mit variabler Länge, am Ende jeder Runde wird immer nur einer der fünf Bezirke gewertet, am Spielende dann noch mal alle 5 Bezirke. Bei dem Spiel kommt es auf das richtige Timing und gutes Ressourcen-Management an. Ressourcen sind dabei die Würfel und Gold (als Joker und um Schiffe in Anspruch zu nehmen. Je länger das Spiel dauert, um so bessere Kettenzüge kann man machen, wenn man taktisch klug plant und spielt. I was so proud of my son, Lei, when he invented TMI Boom's first game-of-the-month, Inchworm™ - and doubly so when he applied the core Inchworm game mechanic for a very different playing game D-Day Dice for a history class project. This Axis vs Allies WWII game is simple, but has some elegant and unique action for a quick playing blast that I can't get enough of. When he produces the final version of the game for TMI Boom, it probably won't be in this theme, but I am impressed that he applied graphics and game play that fit the D-Day theme (troops avoiding land mines and barbed wire as they cross the beach). What’s your favorite comic themed game? 💥💬🗯️ Age of Comics: The Golden Years by @liriusgames is a worker placement game where you compete to be the best comics publisher in the ‘50s! In the game, you’ll take turns placing your Editor meeples on spaces that’ll allow you to hire creatives, develop a comic, gain ideas for comics, print said comics, collect money, or run sales to fulfil orders. Once you’ve used the first 3 actions to gain the resources you need, you’ll print a comic, paying the creatives’ salary and gaining fans (which will provide VP) The cool thing is that if you want to skip development and gaining ideas, you can print a rip-off of a comic someone else published. This will gain you less fans initially but if you have the right creatives on board, you can use the Sales action to fulfil orders, gaining your rip-off a ton of fans. As originals also score you extra points at the end of the game, you’ll have to decide if saving 2 actions is worth the VP loss Once you’ve printed your 2nd comic, you’ll unlock bonus actions. You’ll choose 1 of the main actions to place your cube under and when you take that action again, you’ll gain that bonus action too. These will help form your strategy as they are pretty powerful and add some much needed complexity to the game. Additionally, this incentivizes the players to print rip-offs to unlock these bonuses quickly The Sales action provides an additional area for players to think of as the space allows players to move on a map around New York, picking up orders that grants fans if fulfilled but penalizes you if unfulfilled. While we’ve heard it is distracting by some, we feel that it prevents Age of Comics from being a plain worker placement game and just adds enough dimension to keep things interesting Age of Comics may seem like a run of the mill worker placement game initially but the mechanisms that we mentioned help it stand out! My Favorite Carrera continues to be a big hit at our game group table. The closed economy and trick taking combined with the ability for players to permanently remove gasoline from the game is just so great. This is definitely my favorite “last trick” trick taking game as there is incentive throughout to win tricks to gain momentum. When we want to play with miniatures, one of the best characteristics that minis may have, IMHO, is to be easely painted because for the most part of our life we have too less time to paint. This piece is incredibly easy to paint with speed paints/inks and the result is very good. Then if you use a little glow effect it becomes more terrifying! What’s your favorite game about soda? 🥤 Soda Smugglers by @bitewinggames is a bluffing game where you try to smuggle soda past the borders! In the game, you’ll take turns being the border guard while the others are dealt 5 suitcase cards. They’ll each choose facedown 2 that they’ll want to bring through the border and 1 card as a bribe. All bribes are then revealed and the border guard will decide who to accept bribes from, which suitcase to investigate, and who to arrest, with actions limited based on the number of players As players are only allowed to legally bring a maximum of 1 bottle of soda past the border, they’ll have to convince the guard to either take their bribe or trick them into letting them through if they want to bring in more. If the guard arrests them, the guard will get an equal number of points from the bank as how much they wanted to sneak through. If the player was only bringing in 0-1 bottles though, the arresting guard will have to apologize by giving the player 2 of their points. This does encourage players to attempt to convince the guard to arrest them if they play only 1 bottle We love how this game streamlines one of the highly rated bluffing games out there, Sheriff of Nottingham. It condenses that experience down to a lower playing time while keeping the essence of bribing and bluffing in the game. That being said, it does lose some complexity and scoring mechanisms because of this so you’ll have to decide on which you prefer more! While we aren’t the biggest fans of bluffing games, we do enjoy the small package that Soda Smugglers provides and do enjoy our plays of it! The game also encourages table talk so it does work better with groups that are comfortable with doing that! Additionally, you can feel stuck at times because you’re not dealt the cards you want but you can always benefit from what you’re dealt with if you bluff well! Auf Tuefel Komm Raus came out during my daughter’s first birthday party. I tracked down a reasonable copy from Japan of all places. @watchesmovies - the next copy I see for a reasonable price is yours! We played with each player leading the action 2x instead of the target score to ensure the game didn’t wear out its welcome. My first time playing was a blast - but it went long when the players in the lead couldn’t win big enough, but everyone was so far behind it didn’t seem possible to catch up. The mechanisms are super fun and it’s a great game for involving little ones as partners who can turn over coal. The highs and lows of this push your luck game are incredible. There is something about flipping over a tile/token for the whole table to see the result. Everyone is invested in each players ability to push up their pulls to make bets win (everyone can win if at least one player flips enough coal). There are certainly some rough edges and there seems there can be a bit of a runaway leader issue even with the deal for the devil. Just limiting the number of rounds you play seems to be a good middle ground as the game will end. The poker chips in this production are so fun and crazy that it was a 2013 production.
