Bird no.114: turnstone. I can’t believe it has never occurred to me earlier that a turnstone is so called because it flips stones! To be fair, I don’t think I’ve seen a turnstone before so I’ve never had reason to think about the name. This morning the sun is shining and it’s the first weekend that really feels like summer is upon us. I’m keen to spot, or at least hear, a savi’s warbler but I arrive too late and it has retired for the day. Instead, I walk to Lagoon 4 to look at a pair of grey plovers and to try and find a turnstone. At first, all I can spot are a pair of greenshank, avocets and a redshank but a helpful birder up in Rutland for the day from London has eyes on a grey plover in magnificent summer plumage as well as the turnstone. I hadn’t realized how beautiful turnstones are with their black and white checkered neck pattern and glorious rich chestnut brown back. And sure enough, the bird was flipping pebbles to look for food. Turnstones breed in the Arctic Circle, from Greenland and Canada to Scandinavia, but I don’t know whether this bird is heading there or whether it’s a juvenile spending the summer in Britain. My little hedge sparrow etching is off to London tomorrow for the second round of judging for the #royalacademysummerexhibition. I am delighted with the job @framefactorybrighton have done on it in a beautiful oak, understated and simple thin frame and I’ve got everything crossed that someone on the hanging committee will give it a nod as it gets carried past them. We will know at the end of this month whether our shortlisted pieces have got in or not and I will be sharing the news on here, whatever the outcome! I have just two of these prints available at the exhibition I’m running at the moment at @fox_forward_flowers_friends and the rest of the edition is reserved for the RA, so if you’re a fan of this piece then get on down! Bird no.113: bar-tailed godwit. What a special bird this is. I had no idea before reading up on bar-tailed godwits that they are capable of such extraordinarily long migrations. There are five subspecies and the birds that overwinter in NZ and Australia travel between 3000 and 5000 miles to China or Alaska, with some traveling over 8000 miles (13000 km). I’ve seen straight-billed black-tailed godwits at Rutland Water but this was my first bar-tailed godwit with its slightly upturned bill and heavier-set build. I love watching the birds as they fly in and out of my garden. A few months ago I spotted a blackbird with a mouthful of dog hairs it had found in the crevices of our patio. I imagined a blackbird family with a very comfortable nest! I have a crazy head for a song, and often tunes will just pop in at the smallest of triggers. So for the rest of that week, I was walking around singing 'Blackbird' by The Beatles. It started me thinking how lovely it would be to have one of these beautiful birds in our jewellery collection. I set about working on designs and thinking of the key features I would need to capture. The beautiful black feathers were easy, as by oxidising silver you get a gorgeous dark shiny grey colour. I also wanted to recreate that little movement blackbirds do when they are alert...that flip of the tail that creates such a beautiful and distinctive silhouette. Blackbird eyes are also so distinctive. I made a tiny silver ball and added this to the main body to achieve a perfect result. Finally, the pop of orange on the beak was added by rose gold plating the silver beak. I also had a look at some of the folklore and superstitions surrounding these birds. It is said they encourage you to trust your instincts and guide you on your spiritual path, and they often symbolize adaptability and intelligence. Each of our little birds are one of a kind and will be happy to travel with you wherever you go!
