Bumblebee - on a tea tree ! I love my Tea Tree plant (Leptospermum scoparium) as it’s a total bee-magnet in late spring and early summer. Just another of the many beautiful New Zealand natives in my garden here in Ireland. It’s an evergreen shrub with small needle-like deep-green leaves, that when crushed are aromatic. The flowers have rich pink-red petals and give way to small woody capsules containing tiny seeds. I was delighted to capture this bee busy collecting pollen as the rain clouds approached. Given their decline in recent years I do love seeing these floofy creatures bumbling around, although this one looks like more like he's sunning himself in the early spring sunshine. We have over 250 species of bees in the UK and most are in decline for a variety of reasons; partially because of the growth in popularity of beekeeping in managed hives. Bee careful not to step on a sleeping queen! After emerging from hibernation, buff-tailed bumble bee queens drink nectar, fly short distances, and spend most of their time resting on the ground or vegetation. They rest an average for about 15 minutes between brief flights lasting just 10 seconds. After a couple of weeks, once they gain enough strength, they begin to look for a suitable nesting site, flying in a zig-zag pattern close to the ground and examining holes in the ground and tussocks of vegetation. Buff tailed bumblebee on a perennial cornflower @holmeforgardens yesterday. It was barely moving so either having a doze or just really cold on a chilly, grey April day. If you’re in South Dorset, near Wareham, this garden centre and its extensive garden is well worth a visit: a wonderful place to wander, with such a variety of plants and planting schemes, from formal beds to a wild wood, and all beautifully tended. We’ve watched it develop over the years and what they’ve achieved is amazing. This buff-tailed bumble bee was SO big and fat and fluffy I wanted to stroke it! It clambered about deep in the criss-crossed twigs of the cotoneaster, looking for flowers ready for robbing.
