Hello Everyone! My eyes were wide open when I was in Charleston, recently. Even though it was a work trip, I am so lucky that my client wanted to show me some historical parts of the city. One of my fave parts of the trip was walking through this incredibly beautiful neighborhood. Everywhere I looked, there was a gorgeous house. What made this particular house interesting is that the walls of the previous house that was built there, probably over 200 years ago, are still standing. If you look at the photos, you will see these brick house walls - or at least parts of the walls - are still standing. This is no mistake. It’s part of the prestige of this property. This plein air painting of a tree beside a field from 2016 reflects my inspiration from David Hockney and much of his landscape paintings of Yorkshire. A real treat today to see some drawings of #davidhockney at #charlestonhouse and also to have a little look around the house itself. I very much agree with Hockney in wishing my work brings some joy, as his definitely do for me!
Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell’s line block print poster advertising the Second Post-Impressionist Exhibition held at the Grafton Galleries, London, 5 October-31 December 1912, within which Roger Fry and Clive Bell selected works by British, French and Russian avant-garde artists (including Grant, Bell, Wyndham Lewis, Picasso, Cézanne and Fry himself). . Bell conceived the poster, which Grant realised and would act as a stylistic precursor to the Omega Workshops output. . I’m immersed in the creative lives of Duncan and Vanessa at Charleston at the moment (via Frances Spalding, @markhusseybooks , @jane___hill , @darren.clarke.9659 and Sarah Milroy) for a piece that will be included in the next @night_bird_press pamphlet alongside @hummmaggie . As I type these words I wish I could have met and spent time with them at @charlestontrust in the 20’s and 30’s; their impact on my own life incalculable, more so with each passing day. . INVITED to sketch INSIDE!!!!!!! I was sketching the outside of Charleston House, Firle - home of the Bloomsbury Group - when I was invited to sketch inside!!!!!!! You’re allowed to sit in a chair in each room and sketch - but pencil only and NO ERASERS! I took my small book and tried to be as invisible as possible - but what a complete joy! If you are unfamiliar with Bloomsbury, I’d suggest starting with “Deceived by Kindness” by Angelica Garnett. Vanessa Bell - Landscape with Haystacks, Asheham, 1912 is one of my favourite landscape paintings by her. I had a fairly large space on the wall to fill and a good sized canvas sitting around the studio, so I decided I would recreate her version or as close to it as I could get (never as good as Vanessa Bell's of course) to occupy the vacant wall space in my living room.
