I had the great privilege to audit a Dr. Gerd Heuschmann clinic yesterday. I'd wanted go ride in it but honestly auditing was as valuable if not somehow more so. Watching EVERY horse's quality of gaits improve tenfold over the course of their lesson was incredible. So many excellent reminders about biomechanics and about our responsibility as riders to ride and train these animals in a way that celebrates and protects them. One moment that really stuck with me was watching a big Oldenburg mare practice "forward." She was cantering around the arena on the buckle, fast and cutting corners and no rein contact at all and not at all what you'd put in the dressage show arena... and absolutely STUNNING. And in the moment I just remember thinking, why do we ever try and hold that back - even in a well-intended half halt, or a misguided attempt at collection - we must never try to stifle the beauty and expression that comes so naturally to the horse. It was like years of what I knew to be true finally made sense watching a big bay horse run around the ring. So of course today I came home and ran my big bay horse around my own ring. If I've said it once I've said it a million times, I struggle with his canter. It's huge and I don't know what to do with it and I end up holding it back. So today I let it go and I let him canter with as much of his natural brilliance as he'd muster. I imagined all the times I've seen him gallop 'round his pasture and I told him to do that. He loved it! And when I sat back in the saddle and took some contact again I'll be damned if his canter wasn't straighter and stronger and better balanced than usual, with a neck stretching forward looking for the bit. What a FUN ride too, happy ears on Shaq and big smiles on me. There are many problems that get riders stuck and prevent them (and their horses) from making progress. But we have found over the years that there are certain issues that completely derail progress, and can become so frustrating to overcome that riders give up. Or… they try to fix them but the “remedies” they come up with cause other (sometimes even worse) problems. So we wanted to come up with a program that gets to the ROOT of the problems. We aren’t interested in covering up symptoms with band-aids. Sometimes the problem doesn’t originate from where you see the symptoms. For example, a noisy lower leg doesn’t come from the leg, and the common advice to “quiet the leg” by clamping it onto the horse’s side actually causes bigger problems in the end. Then not only are you creating a new problem that causes repercussions in the rider’s body (and in the horse’s body) but you never addressed where the problem originated, which means that problem gets further confirmed and harder to fix. It is like adding layers of paint onto wood that needs to be sanded down and primed first. It might temporarily look okay, but in the big picture, it is only causing you more work (and problems) later down the road. We don’t want that for you. And I am pretty sure you don’t either. If you keep doing what you have been doing, you are nearly guaranteed to get the same exact results that you have been getting. If you want different results, if you want to break out of the endless cycle of the same frustrations, mistakes, and problems… it is time to take a different path…. If there is one thing our riding egos love, it is being RIGHT. Let me explain… Let’s say you are having a problem in your riding. You have tried this. You have tried that. Each time you have tried something new, you went into it with the enthusiasm that this could finally be the answer. But then it never is. You end up right back to where things started. And it’s frustrating. It’s frustrating as heck! But because us riders are a fierce and determined bunch, we persevere. We keep at it. We do not let this stop us from continuing to try. Continuing to learn. Continuing to try to crack the mystery of what is holding us and our horses back. If you get your HEAD stuck about being stuck, it makes the matter worse. Then you are focusing on the problem, NOT on the solution. But what do you do when all you see is the problem??? You have to… I mean, you HAVE TO… break out of the current way you are thinking. You have to find a way to look at the problem differently, because somewhere within the problem is ALWAYS the solution. If you haven’t found it yet, it is only because you haven’t yet discovered where and how to look. And you won’t (most likely) just accidentally stumble upon the solution without SOMETHING that stimulates you to look at it… differently. I mean, the solution is THERE, and in the end, the responsibility is YOURS to find it, but you are just not going to find that solution by doing the same thing you have been doing, over and over, and hoping, miraculously, for a different result. Gérer ses peurs, ses frustrations, ses faiblesses, apprendre à communiquer, à accepter l’avis de l’Autre, à le voir, à trouver le calme, la sérénité, à croire en son potentiel, à écouter son Coeur, à ressentir l’Amour inconditionnel et à découvrir une forme de spiritualité qui est propre à chacun d’entre nous, l’équitation telle que je la conçois est indissociable de cette recherche. Faire des épaules en dedans, des changements de pied, du piaffé et du passage devient alors l’Art qui nous permet de donner un cadre à cette recherche, qui lui donne une forme physique, concrète, au même titre que les Arts Martiaux, l’Art de la calligraphie ou du tir à l’arc japonais. C’est une philosophie de vie, une recherche de connexion au Sacré, qui s’exprime par les moments de Grâce que nous partageons avec notre cheval. We had a lovely weekend down in Somerset with good friends and lovely four legged friends too! This phrase popped up in one great session with Becca…”you can’t have anything without something….” . I was pointing out that in the pursuit of evolving the horse physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and gymnastically when asking or setting new tasks it important to accept and appreciate and notice the something that has been given as it is en route to the goal you are advancing towards. Those little somethings all add up to the “anything” that you are both ready to achieve. Therefore you also can’t have something without anything! As we train our horses we are also coaching ourselves, forever advancing and retreating. Learning in all senses is a mastership. Being present is vital and taking note of the detail as well as zooming out to the context is a skill that needs to develop to the point that it happens in real time and instinctively. Like this we are able to listen to what’s needed whilst still having an eye on the next achievable development. Improvement then becomes a succession of little developments. Saturday evening I presented a talk focussed on Riders Mindset. We covered topics of anxiety, fear, phobia, trauma, emotional needs, a touch on hormonal/menopause effect, and the bigger picture of the environment and culture/society we are exposed to. We discussed openly and with vulnerability our challenges and past “perceived” failings. I also covered the nature of confidence and what elements make that a “something”. Tools were discussed around all those subjects and some possibilities were explored and exposed so that attendees could discover their own areas of possible development which now feels more achievable I hope. More talks like this are being considered, with a nod towards actively rehearsing what we wish to achieve and breaking those down to allow them space to happen. In my experience therapy and coaching have an excellent overlap and thus provide brilliant holistic results for all involved. What if you could make your horse happy and yourself at the same time? And what if the PATH to do that was to find a “Less is More” approach to improving your seat? Improving your seat shouldn’t be torturous. Or humiliating. In fact, it should be enjoyable work. Even “fun”... Or at least that is the way we see it. Years ago, We used to subscribe to the "many hours at the longeline" prescription for improving the seat. Now, don't get me wrong, longe lessons can be AMAZING. And they are still the very BEST way to improve the seat. But they are only a small part of the equation. There are many seat issues that are actually best addressed while doing normal training work. BAD longe lessons (yes, those exist) can be torturous, humiliating, and can teach the WRONG things. On top of that, many riders do not have access to good quality longe lessons. They require a knowledgeable seat instructor and a supple, well-trained, sound, SAFE horse. Many riders don’t know that there are things you can do OFF the horse that can 10X the development of your seat and your riding When we transitioned away from teaching lessons at home on our own school horses to traveling to teach all over the world and then also teaching online, we needed to find ways to help riders improve their seats without the use of longe lessons. Furthermore, we found that sometimes riders had had previous bad experiences with “seat instruction” and were resistant to direct coaching on their seat. We stopped focusing so much on teaching riders to implement a form, and instead we found that riders learned faster and BETTER when we focused on function first. What a revelation!!! In fact, we found that the crucial component, in fact, to make seat improvement efforts "effective "is the right combination of function-based movement lessons, theoretical instruction, imagery exercises, and tactical feedback. Auch für die weitere Ausbildung oder #Korrektur ist "Bodenpersonal" oft enorm hilfreich. 🦄 Wenn der treibende Schenkel nicht angenommen wird, kann das #Vorwärts von unten verstärkt und die Hilfe neu verknüpft werden – idealerweise an der #Longe. 🦄 Den seitwärts treibenden Schenkel, z.B. im Übertreten, verstärken wir vom Boden aus über Körpersprache und Peitsche. So lernen Pferd und Reiter die Lektion ohne Stress und "quetschen". 🦄 Bei ängstlichen Pferden kann die Vertrauensperson am Boden Ruhe in die Arbeit bringen – ein echter Gamechanger, wenn das #Pferd schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht hat und dem Reiter misstraut. 🦄 Komplexe Lektionen wie #Piaffe und Spanischer Schritt können auf einzelne Segmente heruntergebrochen werden und sind im Team viel einfacher zu erarbeiten: z.B. The Rider Makeover Course is the PERFECT course for those who mostly work on their own… because it gives you the tools and understanding you need to become your own seat coach for yourself. You will learn how to evaluate your own seat and pinpoint where your seat issues are coming from (not just the symptoms of those issues!). You will learn tools to help yourself improve your seat every single day, every single ride, and even on the days you are NOT able to ride. In fact… that brings me to the next thing… What is doubly COOL about this course is that it is designed so you can participate in EVEN if you are not able to ride. Because, it happens sometimes that you can’t ride because of the weather, illness, injury, or work or life sometimes getting IN THE WAY (don’t you hate it when you have to pause your riding because of that!!). But because of the TOOLS you will learn in this course, you will be able to keep yourself supple even on the days you can’t ride so that when you CAN ride, you can enjoy those rides even more! How does this work? The course makes use of rider imagery lessons which can, of course, be practiced on the horse, but if you are not able to ride, you can use them as Visualization exercises (which science has shown can dramatically improve athletic performance and learning!).
