We were able to find this vagrant Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens) during our recent Denver Audubon Birdathon. Look for one of my fav butterflies on the the trails around Boulder, the Colorado Green Hairstreak. They are very small - about the size of your thumbnail - and flit back and forth along the trail. They are very territorial, so if you spot one, it will remain within a 20 or 30 foot section of trail, and frequently land on grass tufts. This makes it really easy to photograph. Its preferred habitat seems to be open ponderosa pine woodland. Go for a hike in the foothills, and keep your eyes peeled for a dark little butterfly flying back and forth, low along the trail. Here’s a shout-out to our Cliff Swallows - Thanks Kevin Rutherford for the photo. They are true Jungle Birds, long-distance migrants that spend the winter in S Brazil, N Argentina and Uruguay. Every year they return to Colorado to breed, and make colonies of wonderful mud nests on cliffs and under bridges. The nests look like round mud pots with a single opening. Every little blob of mud was carried to the nest in the parents’ beak. This morning I explored the east side of the Sand Wash Basin HMA, and saw quite a number of bands who were "out of bounds," on the wrong side of the boundary fence. Royal Gorge Park, Colorado Nov 1st, 2023 Home of America’s Highest Suspension Bridge, sitting on the Royal Gorge, above the Arkansas River. The park itself has many activities like walking on the wood planks across the bridge, zip lining across the Gorge, a sky coaster, and a gondola ride, if that’s your thing. There is also the Royal Gorge Railroad Ride if you want to get fancy. Looks pretty cool actually. But not my thing when solo, so I avoided all that and just went to check out the side views. This is the left/south side on a 1.6 easy overlook loop. Our licensed wildlife rehabilitation services have made a significant difference in the lives of countless wildlife in distress. Just this year, we have successfully released various native species back into the wild, transferred others for further care, and are currently rehabilitating a diverse group of animal patients at this very moment. Nearly every animal we have transferred this year for further care and release could have stayed with us in-house to receive their full care regiment and recover. It is a much less stressful rehabilitation process for the patient when we don’t have to transfer them. This data showcases the success of our current efforts but also highlights the importance of growing our facility. With outdoor recovery enclosures, we could provide even better care for our patients and expand our educational outreach to thousands more people each year. I'm on the road now for a month of wild horse walkabout, and my first stop is Little Book Cliffs in Colorado, near Grand Junction. It's my first visit to this HMA and wow is it pretty around here. Yesterday afternoon I took a stab at driving into the range from DeBeque, and after making some wrong turns and circling around rugged dirt roads I realized my mistake and found the actual road into the wild horse area. But by the time I got almost 15 miles in, some quite foreboding clouds were forming to the west and I noped on out of there, not really caring to try my luck at navigating hilly dirt roads in rain. This morning I set out early from the Coal Canyon trailhead to hike the trail system from there. Randomly I picked the Spring Creek canyon trail, and as soon as I got up on the first ridge I could see a littlle band of six horses down at the bottom of the canyon. They agreed to let me hang out near them for the morning. The bay horse here is the band stallion, and the roan one of his mares. Just outside of Browns Canyon National Monument. They hopped a fence as soon as they spotted me, but luckily they didn’t get too far and stopped so I could get a sweet shot of them with Mt Princeton as a back drop. May is still early spring in the mountains, so taking a birthday trip to the Great Sand Dunes was a great idea. After some rainy days, the sand was pretty hard and easy to walk on. Hiking dunes is not my favorite activity, but the views from the top are totally worth the effort. Just started a new age decade and it somehow sounds scary. 40. I still look the same as 10 years ago (or even better), I feel the same (maybe just a bit wiser) so not sure what the hell this passport age is. Several days ago, a kind-hearted individual brought us an injured Lazuli Bunting after it collided with a window. Our dedicated team has been providing her with support and medications, and we’re thrilled to report that she has already regained an impressive amount of her flight ability. However, her journey to full recovery will be a long one, and we’re committed to giving her the best care possible. Lazuli Buntings are small, vibrantly colored songbirds found primarily in the western United States, including Colorado. Named after the gemstone lapis lazuli, males are known for their striking blue plumage, while females have more subdued brown tones with hints of blue. These birds prefer habitats like scrubby areas, open woodlands, and brushy edges. Their diet consists mainly of insects, seeds, and berries, which they forage for on the ground and in shrubs. Lazuli Buntings are migratory birds, wintering in Mexico and returning to their breeding grounds in spring. While they are not considered rare in Colorado, sightings can still be a special treat for bird enthusiasts. Window collisions are a common hazard for birds, but there are several ways to make your windows safer. Apply decals or bird tape to the outside of windows to break up reflections, or use netting and screens to create a barrier. Another effective method is to reduce the transparency by closing curtains or blinds when not needed.
