Mental health awareness 🧠 This is part of an ongoing personal project - I don’t have a fancy name or artist statement for it, it is simply a visualisation of emotions and emotional states. This one is my current experience of dissociation. I’ve found this project is really cool, because the way I experience and represent emotions is so fluid. Once, my representation of dissociation was in bold lines and stark contrasts - bright colours encased in a clearly defined border of black, emotions experienced in isolation - separated, defined, clear. Each part of me separate. Each emotion separate, blinding and jarring in intensity, a single-focused feeling. Now, as I move to a place of healing and peace, things are less confined and isolated. My normal, day-to-day existence is more like the bright colours touching and mixing - living is a spectrum of colour, each moment of feeling that comes and then goes. There’s more ebb and flow, and a co-existence of emotions. Dissociation still exists, but now it feels dull - it’s not like jumping between the contrasting extremes anymore. It is simply a place that I retreat to, usually unconsciously, when the colours get a little too bright. I’m still learning how to manage co-existing emotions, but my default state is now to retreat rather than separate. Letting the colourful emotions stay mingled, but stepping back from them for a while. The black in this image represents the old walls I would put up between emotions. This blackness is now just a fluid buffer between myself and the colours. The beiges represent the dullness, the muffled, muddy way I experience feelings when dissociated. The yellow is the little ray of light in the dull darkness of dissociation - the colours peeking through, reminding me of where I can return to when I’m ready to feel again. In terms of technique, this project is crude and messy. It’s not perfect by any means. MAY: Natural Delights #colormyworld2024 I wasn’t so sure about this palette, even though I love the photo prompt. But I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the softer palette. I decided to combine this challenge with the #windowstotheworldchallenge, hosted by @artsolute_beginner. Unlike the amazing host, Louise, I’m not quite patient enough to draw up a grid … so I used masking tape 😂. Scroll for a few snippets of the process. This is my interpretation of the 'April-Spring Blossom' prompt for the colourmyworld 2024 art challenge. This unique art challenge welcomes all manner of abstract art with the colours selected by the extremely talented hosts @kath.artique, @colorful.bliss, @_adinas_art_ , zenart_by_alexandra_zentai. Abstract art is something I have always struggled with and its one of my aims to create more of it this year. The soft spring colours of the prompt and a very informative session on breaking down the elements of abstract art by artist Jenny bhat, gave me some much needed direction and inspiration to create this painting. I have to say, making lines directly with paint is a sure short way to improve brush control and develop a super steady hand!
