Recently, we welcomed a visitor from the Missing Persons Unit to our office, marking the beginning of an incredible partnership. At Victim Services of Durham Region, we're always striving to innovate and provide the best possible care. That's why we've embedded a Missing Persons Crisis Intervention Counsellor within the Missing Persons Unit. This pioneering initiative is the first of its kind in Ontario, and we couldn't be more proud. Our dedicated counsellor is on hand to offer vital support to individuals reported missing, as well as their families. From immediate crisis intervention to providing essential resources upon their return, we're here every step of the way. But our commitment doesn't stop there. We recognize the importance of culturally responsive services, especially when it comes to indigenous youth and their families. That's why our program places a special emphasis on addressing the calls to action from the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls inquiry. We're determined to tackle the disproportionate representation of indigenous youth in missing persons cases head-on by working collaboratively with our indigenous partners. This is just the beginning of an incredible journey, and we're honored to be at the forefront of such meaningful work. Independence Hall Students Celebrate A Successful Year of Job Skills Training! This school year, we’ve partnered with Chelsea High School’s Independence Hall students, providing them with valuable job skills as part of their curriculum. Weekly, they’ve contributed across many departments, including culinary, housekeeping, grounds maintenance, and administrative roles like assembling marketing brochure packets. Their hard work not only earns them school credit but helps to prepare them for independent living by teaching them vocational life skills. Our residents and staff have loved seeing their smiling faces and benefiting from their assistance – they have certainly enriched our community. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has just released its annual statistics for 2023/24 🏆✨ In the past year: ✔️ 330,984 young people started their DofE, with participants giving a huge 4,725,825 million hours of volunteering to communities all over the UK. ✔️ Gold Award starts were up by a massive 16.6%. ✔️ More than 30% of 14-year-olds in the UK started their Bronze DofE. ✔️ Young people achieved 155,502 Awards – up 7.3% on 2022/23. ✔️ The number of Licensed Organisations delivering DofE has increased by 245 (up by 5%). ✔️ An amazing 39,457 Leaders and volunteers made our work possible. Community Partnership Announcement This year our theme as a school is Connecting In, Reaching Out, a theme that guides much of the transformational work occurring at St Francis of Assisi School. As part of Reaching Out we're excited to share that from Term 3 onwards we will be the new home for Athlelstone Kindergym! This Kindergym has been a cornerstone for young families in the East, and when they reached out earlier in the year looking for a new home we were happy to take the conversation, then over time look at how we could support this community group. The most exciting part of this partnership will be the benefit to our current students. As we integrate the kindergym into our exisiting infrastructure, we will look to employ Kindergym staff to work with our students post their sessions, utilising the equipment to create a Gross Motor room for our junior primary children. We’re thrilled to share a wonderful collaboration between the Bermuda Diabetes Association and The Family Centre (TFC)! Last week, our Teaching Kitchen was buzzing with youthful energy as we hosted TFC’s Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) programme. The YLA programme is all about empowering our young leaders to make positive decisions and unlock their full potential. And what better way to do that than through hands-on experiences? During the session, TFC delved into the art of conflict resolution through cooking! Our own Sara Bosch de Noya and Liana de Medeiros were on hand to provide nutrition tips. It was incredible to see the students whip up their own delicious tostadas while learning valuable lessons about managing conflicts in everyday life. Because let’s face it, conflicts are inevitable, but it’s how we handle them that truly matters.
