From the street, both parts of the semi-detached house appear like identical twins: small front gardens, floor-to-ceiling large window openings, recesses for entrance loggias on the first floor and small terraces on the top floor, plus the joint pattern of the precast concrete elements. The industrial character of the prefabrication is emphasized by the lattice balustra- des in front of the French windows and terraces. All of this follows the gradient of the street, the joints of the respective building components blend finely into the system and bear witness to the careful detailed planning. Despite his seemingly ordinary beginnings in Annapolis Valley, he went on to lead an extraordinary life: travelling the world as a ships carpenter, establishing a concrete cooperative before concrete was well-established in Canada, advocating for socialism, and building an eccentric home with his wife Mabel. Through all of his adventures, he continued to paint and sculpt, leaving us with invaluable records of rural life in Canada. His birthday celebration will kick-off the 2024 season. We are looking forward to the reopening of the Hazelwood Gallery! On June 2nd, the Teapot Cottage exhibit opens, featuring miniatures of the Teapot Cottage created by over 30 Nova Scotia artists. The opening will take place from 1-4pm on Sunday, June 2nd. Keeping with Charlie's spirit, the artworks will be displayed anonymously with information about participating artists posted on the walls of the gallery. In the ethos of equality, each mini cottage will be for sale for a flat fee of $200. Charles Macdonald was a firm believer in equality for all. The original teapot cottage was built by Charlie and his workers at Kentville Concrete Products as a make-work project during the Depression. Charlie’s management of his concrete cooperative was informed by his egalitarian values - employees drew “what they needed” from company coffers and advertisements promoted concrete as a part of a social change movement.
