The Burmis Tree which has stood for around 700 years died in the 1970s and has been looked after ever since by the local community. This limber pine stands above the Crowsnest Pass and when we stopped so I could take an image, it was in the midst of a sleeting downpour which very soon after turned to heavy snow. →AB→BC→AB Flew into Calgary, stayed in the Crowsnest Pass area, then went on day trips to the surrounding areas. The snowy landscapes were a nice change of scenery from the Vancouver Island rains, although everywhere is seriously lacking in snow this year. On my recent trip to the Boundary District, I poked around Greenwood a bit. The downtown core is only two blocks long, so peering into the 120 year old storefronts doesn't take long. This old store, at 301 S. Copper St (Hwy 3) was built in 1897 by Louis Ostrosky and operated as the Greenwoid Trading Co until 1907, when it was purchased by P. Burns and Co and operated as one of their many meat markets. Petersen's Grocery is entirely fictional as the building was used as a movie set for "Snow Falling on Cedars" (1999). Although there is no signage, and nothing compelling most people to stop and look, the interior of this old shop is full of vintage electrical appliances. The door is locked, the lights are off, and there is no sign or notice describing the collection or who owns it. I didn't find any background about the collection online. Kind of bizarre, but very cool to stumble upon.
