Wonky satin stitching is a go! It's tricky to see with the foot where the fabric is sometimes. I wonder if base stitching with free motion embroidery would make it any easier?? Maybe in an obvious thread colour that's easy to see... I found sometimes that pale sections of colour or calico blended in too easily to the background. Maybe I need to spray paint the background? I have had a large canvas taking up space for some time. After googling for inspiration, I saw people such as @i_heart_maggie using canvases to make a notice board. Today, I learned how to make a zigzag stitch look like a satin stitch. I do have satin stitches on my machine, but they're all shapes, does anyone know why they're shapes? I'm baffled. So faffing with the zigzag stitch it was! Went back over a few spots that I missed, far corners and such. I'm impressed how nice it looks for a first time, though. Today, I am learning as I add more colour to the white zone, that the spray painted sections act almost like a barrier. In the areas without, the inktense runs amok a bit more than I was expecting. As I wrap the backing around, I realise that where the backings puckered while being sewn, in odd places, it makes it slightly uneven as I bring it around. I debated on whether I should just give in and make bias binding, but then I realised that the quilt has plenty of imperfections, so is one more really going to matter? No one tell the quilt police! The story is, I had some bonus monoprints on white paper, from monoprinting on the lutradur with the lovely workshop from @elliehipkinartist and I wanted to start using this scrap book as my new sketchbook. Back to the quilt! I made the mistake of sewing the outer edge before I'd sewn the middle completely, and I got a lot of issues with the fabric folding in places. I have finished both lutradur pieces from taking a workshop by @elliehipkinartist and they are both very different! I personally prefer the first one, I think with it being the second one I stitched and the monoprinting was clearer, I got the style better. The second one is... well, a beautiful stitched something. They can't all be winners, as Steven Universe would say, "If every porkchop were perfect, we wouldn't have hotdogs." The monoprinting stage from @elliehipkinartist workshop didn't go quite as planned, I tried using some of my plant roots and a wispy leaf thing, and I broke a few leaves. My fabric sketchbook had one last page with scraps from a previous project. It was a silheouette, and with all my mark making bits still out from my lutradur pieces, I decided to explore a curious idea I had about using my fabric pastels for rubbings. An intriguing result. All finished. While the blue was mostly added to counteract the fabric puckering around the densely stitched areas, I quite enjoyed adding it and thought about how the Moorish Idol whizz through the water while stitching it. I began to wonder to myself, why didn't I use black or, in the very least, a dark fabric for the stripes? But it is an interesting texture building up the stitches so densely. I tried to mimick the swish of the hoop like I've observed @meredithwoolnough do it, and I was surprised at how quickly the black thread built up. I've been trying out a style of work that's similar to how @collage.quilter creates their collage quilts. Except I went with simple colours and only had bondaweb. I can now see why steam a seam is used! Bondaweb does not stay put, so I had to keep ironing bits as I went. Quilters, when you are machine quilting a big quilt, where do you put it all? In a bid to beat gravity, I lifted mine while both sides were rolled. I've seen people put them on their shoulders and look so graceful. I don't know how they do it, I was more quilt than a person. As you can see, it mostly ended up in my face. I thought all I needed was one day to finish the quilt. Grossly over estimated that one! I've decided quilting should also be called 'The textile project with many steps to go wrong' or 'Sew while defying gravity'. The perfectionist in me wants it to go perfectly. It hasn't. The part of me that just wants this quilt done, however, has decided that if it's not falling apart upon completion, it's a success. I see why long arm quilters exist.
