Babylon (2022) [Image text]: The party scene we were supposedly getting in Sacha Baron-Cohen's Bohemian Rhapsody, by the way. There are some great scenes here, and some great scene-performances. Scene-to-scene I was having a good time, but with it's runtime (though, I honestly (and surprisingly) didn't think this was as much of an issue with quantity of characters and storylines running simultaneously) couldn't help but feel things were starting to buckle and get disjointed narratively; into hour two, I was solidly at about a 3.5/5 stars. I really liked the direction things took in the last 45 minutes or so, though, I thought things came full circle. Self-indulgently derivative? I understand the arguments to that effect, but I bought into it. This is destined to be a cult classic, which is fascinating to see in real time (or 1.5 years or so late). Bangin' score too. Filmes de noites passadas: assisti "Babilônia" ( #babylon), épico histórico de #damienchazelle. A trama acompanha um grupo de personagens (interpretados, entre outros, por #bradpitt, #margotrobie, #diegocalva e #jovanadepo) durante um dos momentos mais fascinantes na história do cinema, a chegada do som. Uma obra extravagante e cheia de bizarrices, exatamente como o período retratado. É raro o cinemão de Hollywood produzir algo tão ousado. Porém, apesar das três horas de duração, achei tudo muito superficial, parece um resumo de uma série de TV. Destaque para a reconstituição de época espetacular, as cenas de jazz, personagens coadjuvantes marcantes e uma sequência de "descida ao inferno" que me lembrou David Lynch. Gostei bastante. Também assisti o curta-metragem documental "Os Panteras Negras" ( #blackpanthers), dirigido pela grande #agnesvarda em 1968. Varda acompanhou os protestos dos Panteras após a prisão de seu líder, Huey P. Newton. Um verdadeiro documento histórico com imagens e entrevistas impactantes.

The beauty of Babylon 💃🚬 After watching Babylon, I was a little torn on the film. Some aspects of it just didn't work for me, yet others blew me away. What I loved from start to finish were the nostalgia, the immaculate cinematography, and the ostentatious score, which beautifully underlined every image. Vi #Babylon (2022) a principios de este mes y me parece inaudito que no le haya ido mejor tanto en taquilla como en la temporada de premios del 2023 😯🤔 En general me gustó mucho, aunque tiene detalles que no me convencieron. Escrito y dirigido por #DamienChazelle (el mismo que estuvo al frente de las aclamadas obras #Whiplash y #LaLaLand) y ambientado en Los Ángeles, este filme de drama, comedia, historia y metaficción narra el auge y la caída de Nelly ( #MargotRobbie), Jack ( #BradPitt) y Manny ( #DiegoCalva) entre 1927 y 1952, un período en el que abundó la decadencia, la ambición, el desenfreno y los excesos en un Hollywood que además estaba pasando del cine mudo al sonoro. 🟢 La secuencia inicial (la fiesta que termina al amanecer) me pareció magnífica. 🟢 Las #actuaciones que dieron vida a los 3 roles principales capturaron mi atención desde el principio por la humanidad y tridimensionalidad que exhiben, impregnadas con ese aire de excesos que caracteriza todo lo demás dentro del filme. También me agradó el trabajo de los actores que interpretaron a Elinor y Sidney: #JeanSmart and #JovanAdepo, respectivamente, porque a través de ellos se describen otras aristas de la industria. 🟢 La #bandasonora me fascinó, pienso que es fenomenal. 🟡 Considero que las escenas en torno al gánster (Tobey Maguire) no aportan información significativa tal y como están. Sus formas estrafalarias (todo lo alusivo a depravación y excesos) tienen tanta presencia que distraen de su fondo y propósito: mostrar al hombre que tanto teme Nelly en acción. Tal vez una sola escena, corta y poco estrambótica habría sido más contundente. 🤔➡️ Ahora que la he visto y contrastado con mi recuerdo del tráiler, me he percatado de que muy poco o nada de lo relativo al cine mudo y su transición al sonoro se asoma en este último, y que lo más resaltante era que los personajes estaban de fiesta con frecuencia. Esto me lleva a pensar que la estrategia de mercadeo para esta cinta quizás no la favoreció e incluso pudo llevar a parte de la audiencia a sentirse engañada. Creo que si hubiese habido más coherencia entre publicidad y producto, el recibimiento habría sido mejor. Altamente #recomendada
